first time installing, need help with partitioning and install

Post by Chris Hokenso » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

hello,
i've just recieved my slackware 7.0 cd and boot disk in the mail.
i'm really happy....but i cant use it yet.

i need to partition my harddrive first, and i was told there is a program
called something like "fips" or somethign that can do this, instead of using
a windows program to partition my drive.

once i get that done i would appreciate it if someone could point me in the
right direction for installing it.

thanks

Hello!

When partitioning your HD's you can always use ' cfdisk ' which has a
menudriven interface.

I'm installing Slack 7.0 as we type.  The install CD has both Fdisk and
CF disk to create a new partiton.

FIRST Read the readme on install....you will be glad you took the
time.  THEN

1.  Boot off the CD
2.  Log in as Root (type Root)
3  At the prompt type "cfDisk" or Fdisk and they will load.  cf Disk is
easier to understand.
4.  Create a partition for the root install usually 1.0 to 3.0 GB and
then create a second "swap partition" usually 100-200 MB.

5.  Follow the prompts

Heh.... just make sure you're under the 1024 cylinder limitation, otherwise
LILO won't boot your system for sure.

Post by Hernán J. Andrizz » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

Hello:

I'm new with Linux too, and after installing TurboLinux my PC boots only
in Windows 98 like allways ?.
I recomend you to use FIPS (look if it's in your CD or download it). First
you have to read it's instructions to defrag your HD and move all the data
on it to the begining. Then you have to put FIPS in a system floppy and
reboot on it. FIPS is easy to use and if you have a problem partitioning,
it lets you restore your FAT making a previous backup (I've tried and it
worked fine).
Good Luck.

Hernn Andrizzi.

first time installing, need help with partitioning and install

Post by mol.. » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

HI,

I'm a newbie and I have a similar problem.  I have a jaz 2 gig drive
installed on the system already (it worked previously) but now I can't
mount the drive so I can read it's contents.

In the fstab it shows as:
/dev/sda4 /jaz ext2 noauto 0 0

I type:
mount -t ext2 /dev/sda4 /jaz

and I get:
scsi0: medium error on channel 0, id 4, lun 0, cdb: Read (6) 00 00 41
02 00
Current error sd08:04: sense key medium error
additional sense indicates unrecovered read erro
scsidisk I/O error: dev 08:04, sector 2

mount: wrong fstype, bad option, bad superblock or /dev/sda4, or too
many mounted file systems

Sometimes I've gotten the message that says that block 0 is damaged.

How do I format this jaz disk? I'd like to be able to copy the contents
of the current settings on the hard drive as I'd like to convert the
machine to win95 then reinstall linux?  I don't mind deleting any
existing data.

thanks in advance.

only use this if you only want to mount ext2 filesystems only, never a fat jazz disk.
I use the first p[artition for ext2 filesystems so that dev/sdk1 is ext2, and sdk4 is fat when a
dos disk is inserted. or read the ,man fstab file for adding filesystems.

mkfs,  it will let you format a valid partition.

Here's what I'd do...

1.  In the /etc/fstab file, in your jazz entry, change the ext2 to vfat.
2.  Create a directory called /jazz in your / directory.   i.e.,
mkdir /jazz).
3.  When mounting, just type "mount /jazz".  This is, of course,
assuming that all of your drivers are preloaded..but according to your
output, they are.  I'm assuming you either have them already compiled
in or loaded manually.

Your error also has hints of a bad disk or disk drive (nothing new
about that one!).  You may wanna contact Iomega about it...

Hope this helps,
Dan

Hi,

The best way to format your jaz disk is :

1) fdisk to rewrite the partition table. There u'd choose what
filesystem you want on your disk
2)mke2fs or mkdosfs or ..., depending on the filesystem you want to use.

This should work but ... I have the same problem as you when i try to
reformat : sense key medium error ... I haven't found a solution yet.

If you get a clue, please let me know.

Eric

1. First time install with UMSDOS - need help

Hi, everyone.

I'm usually a Windows and DOS guy, but recently I've become interested in
installing Unix on my box. I've gotten the latest Slackware release, as well as
Free BSD and am having some difficulty in understanding the information on
setting up with UMSDOS.

The documentation is... poor at best, and the english is awful.

Has anyone out there got any hints or can they give me a step-by-step on the
process of setting up Slackware with UMSDOS? (Please???)
