pppd stalls...

Post by Gary Campbel » Mon, 05 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Hi.
I have just installed Mandrake 6, and after I read (here) about the
XF86config setup, I was able to connect perfectly using kppp.
After a couple of days, though, I noticed that when connecting as my
unprivileged user, the log window got to 'Starting pppd..." and just sat
there.

The next day, the I started getting the same behavior when logged in as
root.  I had to reinstall about then (for other reasons) and the behavior is
exactly the same - modem connects fine, and then pppd just sits there.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Use 'netcfg' and check your communications login chat script - mine's been
hosed a couple of times for unknown reasons; I'm trying to keep a log of what I
do so I can determine what util is stomping it.
What I see is the modem init string gets written into the chat script, and
something wierd is appended to that.

Full log output would be helpful here.  Bill Unruh's "How to hook up PPP"
has good advice on the process, and also suggests how to get meaningful
debug logs -- at http://axion.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html .

Good luck.

pppd stalls...

Gary
The prob might be that the version of pppd needed for the 2.2.x
kernels( im sure mandrake uses one of those) is pppd-2.3 instead of
pppd-2.2. I use slackware but when i upgraded my kernel to 2.2.x, my
pppd stopped working. i had to go to /usr/sbin, delete the old

to pppd-2.3. Perhaps u should check this out on your box

good luck

Clive

Thanks for your input, friends.

Here is the log of the last three attempts I made. The middle session seems
the odd man out, but I included it in case it is illuminating.

Sure would appriciate any ideas...

1. PPPD: Stalls then crawls

After upgrading from RedHat 5.1 to Mandrake 6.1, my PPP setup
is experiencing a problem.  At some point during a session, I'll hit
a stall (http or ftp).  I can often get communication to resume, but
from then on the throughput will be lousy (less than a tenth of the
normal rate).  Many times the connection will be completely hosed
and it can only be fixed by killing and restarting PPPD.

ifconfig shows the PPP0 to still be operating and errors hover
around 1%.

I believe that the stalls are related to binary transfers, so I've
tried playing with asyncmap and escape options, but with no
luck.
Except for the asyncmap and escape options, the following
options file is basically the same as I had running nicely under
RedHat 5.1  Without those options, I get the same behavior.

   /dev/ttyS1
   115200
   crtscts
   defaultroute
   noipdefault
   asyncmap 0x200a0000
   escape 0x11,0x13
   lock
   mtu 576
   mru 576
   lcp-echo-interval 10
   netmask 255.255.255.0

Any ideas?  Thanks in advance.
