Can't install Linux-Mandrake 6.1

I am a newbie in Linux...

This is my PC configuration:
Gateway Performance 500 with 2 harddisks (both Quantum Fireball) of 13.6G
and 6.8G respectively and a Ultra66 IDE controller from Promise Technology.
I intend to devote the entire 2nd disk (6.8G) for Linux.

I tried numerous attempt to install Macmillan's edition of Linux-Mandrake
6.0 into my new PC without any success.

During my last attempt, I went to Promise website to download its beta
driver for this controller card. No luck! Still couldn't get linux
installed.

In desperation, I contacted the technical support of Macmillan software
only to get a curt reply stating that my hardware is not yet supported by
Linux software. That it! (Wonder whether I could get my money back!)

Have anyone out with a Ultra66 card succeed in installing Linux?
Appreciate if you could share your knowledge. Thanks.

Hello:I also have a gateway with a ultra66 controllercard.The problem is
that the driver only works with some kernals.Do your self a favor and just
unplug the data cable from the controller card and then plug that end into
the first ide connector on the motherboard.This connector is directly
behind the hard drive cage when you lay the cpu down with the door side
up.Then mandrake can see it no with problem.I run a 550mhz myself and have
no problems after doing this.I too run two hard drives mine are the 22gb
at 7200rpm.Email me if you need anymore info for setting up the gateway

1. RH 6.1 and Mandrake 6.1 Freeze on Install

Metrobook II  Laptop -
    233 mHz PII
    80MB RAM
    Logitech GlidePoint touch pad
    TEAC CD220E CDROM drive
    1.4 GB HDD

I try to install RH 6.1 from CD from the new RHEA-044 boot disk.  It
says it finds a PS/2 port (is this the touch pad?).

If I give no parameters to the boot: prompt, it continues to read the
CD, the screen turns blue, it continues to read the CD and then it
freezes.  The only way out is the power switch.

If I give "text" to the boot: prompt, it reads the CD, offers me a
choice of languages and freezes.

With Mandrake, I can choose language and keyboard and the CD is read for
all the packages.  It says something like "some sort of PS/2 device
found on psaux" and freezes.

I've searched the "linux on a laptop" sites and can't fine the Metrobook
mentioned.

Anyone have any ideas?
