Install Problems - VFS: Cannot open root device 02:1c

Post by mvei » Mon, 24 Feb 1997 04:00:00

Greeting -

I am attempting to install Slackware v 2.x on an IBM Thinkpad utilizing a straight IDE boot image.  The boot
successfully recognizes my HD geometry and returns the following:

---------
Partition Check:
hda: hda1
----------
VFS: Insert root floppy

After initiating the root image floppy, I am recieving the following message:
----------
VFS: Cannot open root device 02:1c
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 02:1c
----------

I have partitioned my HD via DOS FDISK to include one small active DOS partition.  It is my understanding that
Linux will handel the partitioning of the remaining disk space.

Thanks for your help,

1. Slackware Setup Problems - Kernel Panic : VF: unable to mount root fs on 02:1c

Ok.
I just got Slackware 3.3, and im attempting to set it up on an old 486. I
wiped the hard drive and im installing from scratch. I got through the boot
disk, and then to the root disk and get the following error:

Kernel Panic : VF: unable to mount root fs on 02:1c

Now i am having problems with my CD-Rom which i have considered as a
possible cause of this problem.... i am replacing the CD-rom in my Pentium
this week and hoping to stick the old one into my linux machine
But i am not sure if this is my problem.
can anyone help out?

Also, on a side note - i have an old Plus HardCard installed on this
machine - does anyone know if linux will support this? cuz if it does this
will give me an extra 100 megs of hard drive space.

If someone could EMAIL me with answers it would be appreciated
Much thanks in advance.
