Hi,

I want to setup a  series of machines with one machine authenticating users
on all the machines on the network. This is really really easy to do with
NT/95 and I am wondering how to go about doing it with Linux. (in
particular, redhat 5.1)

Bonus points are given if a 95/NT box can authenticate off it as well.

Any tips/ urls/ etc. are greatly appreciated.

thanks

Andrew

Take a look at kerbnet. It is an implementation of MIT's kerberos 5
authentication protocol. The tarball includes source for win95 and NT
clients, as well as UNIX. There's also a replacement for the NT login.
I don't know about 95 login though, probably not since authentication
on 95 is really a joke.

More info on Kerbnet can be fount at:

Information on Kerberos 5 in general can be found at:

1. >centralized authentication<

See NIS for allowing users to login to a multitude of Linux boxes while
only being defined in one place. NIS copies the passwd file among all the
machines, thus allowing the machines to do local authentication.

See SAMBA for allowing 95/NT users to login to a "domain" with the Linux
box doing the authentication. I thik 95 authentication is pretty much
mature, and NT WS is working, but a full NT domain is still down the pike.

Good luck.
