Problems with S3 server

Post by Troy Nels » Mon, 02 Oct 1995 04:00:00

I set up X for a guy with the S3 chipset.  Need the no-linear option.
Can't remember the specifics, but if you man XF86Config (not with Xman,
but with a terminal) and then press the / key - you can search on linear,
no-linear, nolinear, or whatever it is.

I had the exact same problem - that fixed it.

: Hi,

: I'm having troubles setting up my X server on a S3 Vision864 card,
: with an Iiyama (Idek) Vision Master 17 monitor. (using XFree86 3.1.2)

: On launch, I can get completely blank screen, out of which I can't
: leave, even with ctrl-alt-backspace. ctrl-alt-kpd+/- won't change
: modes (the monitor display what frequencies he's receiving and nothing
: changes).

: I usually can quit by making the server coredump by repeatedly
: switching VTs with ctrl-alt-Fxx. I've tried altering the xinitrc file
: so that the server would quit immediatly after doing something like
: xwd -root but it seems to hang.

: Of course, I've tried the various modes suiting my monitor from the
: modes database, but to no avail. I suspect the server hangs before
: that.

: The INSTALL of XFree86 says the kernel needs to have networking
: support. I've tried recompiling a new kernel with such, but it didn't
: help. Also, "networking" is pretty vague, make configure asks if you
: want it when recompiling, but then there's also a bunch of protocols
: IP about which he asks you afterwards, so I'm not too sure how far
: should I extend the "networking support" in the new custom kernel.

: Any help welcome.

1. Problem running S3 server

I have just installed Linux on my PC at home and it works great. But I can't get
X running on Linux. I ran ConfigXF86 script and when I run startx the screen turns
blanks and it hangs there. I have a 486/66 with 16MB RAM, PCI Bus, NCR53C810 SCSI
controller, S3 Vision 864 graphics accelerator card, ViewSonic 15EX monitor.

I get following output/messages from startx.

What do I need to do to setup X correctly? I am dying to see X running on my Linux Box.
Please help.

Thanks for your time.
