LILO Problem: Wiped out Linux, can't boot Windoze

Post by Stacy Sherm » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

Hi there,

I had a dual boot system w/ Win95 and Linux.  I hadn't used linux at home
in months so I repartitioned my drive and gave the linux partitions back
to Windows.  I rebooted the computer at least once and it came up into
windows OK but now I just get "LI".

I realize I sort of did this bass ackwards but it's done.

I have no Linux left on the drive but Win95 is still intact.  The computer
will not boot, it just hangs on LI.  I want to be able to boot into
Windows95.

How do I fix this?

It looks like booting to DOS and doing fdisk /mbr may fix it but I want to
make doubly sure that it won't erase the windows partition of my HD.

Don't worry, I still have Linux at work.  I just need Windows more at home
and don't really use Linux.

Thanks,

Stacy

Doing "fdisk /mbr" after booting from a win9x startup disk is the first thing
you should try.

I can tell you that I have personally used fdisk /mbr when struggling with
some LILO issues on my dual-boot system with Winbloze98 and I did not nuke
the Winbloze partition.  However, I used fdisk /mbr from DR DOS that is on
my Linux distribution; I don't know if there is any difference in the
results.

LILO is trying to find the _non existant_ /etc/lilo.conf.

On any box that runs Windows 9x get into MS-DOS prompt, put diskette in drive
and do
FORMAT A: /S. Later copy from DOS directory FDISK.EXE on this diskette.
Reboot computer from this floppy and call FDISK /MBR.
Should do the trick.

1. how to completely wipe out LILO from the boot sector

First time installing linux. With not much experience, I installed
everything following the setup instructions. So Lilo was installed in
the master boot record. Later on, I change my mind not to use lilo to
boot up my dual system, NT and linux. But I just have no way to get rid
of lilo from the boot sector. I did reformat my drive and I even
repartitioned my disk. I guess if I have a any utitility to lower format
my disk, I would do so. I know this is not a very smart idea. Dose any
one knwo how to get the LILO out of the boot sector?

need some sincere help, thanks you all in advance.
