Caldera Preview II problems

Post by Tim Holm » Wed, 11 Oct 1995 04:00:00

I just installed Caldera Preview II, and now I can't reinstall WordPerfect
for SCO.  I went very easily with Preview I.

Here's what happened when I started the install script:

Using /tmp/WpTmP
     Please Wait
Error: Can't open display: :0.0
     Unable to execute /tmp/WpTmP/ifiles/cdinst.SCO_S
Warning: Unable to execute the GUI installation.  Your
DISPLAY environment variable may be wrong.
     Starting the character-based CD installation.
/tmp/WpTmP/ifiles/cdinst.chr: /tmp/WpTmP/Wp60//install: No such file or
directory
/tmp/WpTmP/ifiles/cdinst.chr: ./install.wp: No such file or directory

A few other weird things.  Express install left me with a system that would
not boot.  And the graphic install hung on the time setting.  The only way
I could get it to go was a custom ascii install.

Did they get rid of the LIM (Linux Install Manager)?  I did not install
a couple of the pieces, so I rebooted via the floppies and tried to select
some packages, but it said that everything was installed.

When I start X, it complains of Transocket can't connect or something.   And
there is something screwy with the FONTSERVER.  This may actually be the
problem with WP.

I don't know.  This is a bit discouraging.  The view from my computer says
that this is a step backward.  Anybody else have similar problems?  I'd
be happy to find out I've done something dumb...

This is kind of a rambling post, but it seems like a lot of stuff went wrong.
I would really appreciate it if anybody can shed some light on these things.
The really discouraging part is that I read that a lot of people have been
having problems with the latest Slackware.  I wonder about Debian...

1. Getting installed Caldera Network Desktop Preview II with a 3c589B

Hello everybody,

I have got a Lion6500- Notebook and I am using a 3c589B-PCMCIA-card.
I want to install the Caldera Network Desktop via NFS.
So I have to use the Card. The default values are Irq 10 and I/O-Port
280.
But the linux is using port 0x2e0 and irq 3.
So when I want to Mount a NFS directory, this message appears:

mount clntupd_create: RPC:Port mapper failure RPC: Timed out

I have tried to give linux the irq and the port-adress as
boot-parameters:

linux ether=10,280 or
linux ether=10,0x280h

but it didn't get it.

Could anybody help???

Thanks

Jacques
