install linux on old computer or buy pre-installed new computer?

Post by Joomi L » Tue, 01 Jan 2002 09:56:29

Two questions:

1.  Whether to, how to (if at all possible) install linux on an older
Pentium 266 mhz, 64 mb ram, with 6 gb hard drive, 36.6 US Robotics
modem, Diamond Monster Sound MX400 card, and Canon S450 printer.  This
machine is USB.  (Does the latest kernel even support USB?)  Everthing
except the sound card and printer is *old*...

2.  Would it be easier to just buy a new machine with linux already
installed on it?  I've seen a number of decent machines at less than
$500 advertised at ZDnet.com.

If I can save myself $500 I would, but if linux doesn't support the
older parts on this computer I'm willing to spend that much.

Please send replies to my e-mail address.

Thank you,

Joomi Lee

The modem might be a problem.  Does it work under DOS?  If it does, then
Linux will have no problem.
Don't know about your Sound Card and Canon S450 printer.
Try to get it working with your current sound card, if you can't, you can
buy a linux compatible for about $20 or higher.
Yes the latest kernel support USB.  I have transfered pictures from
digital camera using USB.

Yes, it would be.  I would recommend trying to install linux on your
older machine and posting to this News Group if you are having problem

I have RH 7.2 running on a box quite similar to this.  No problems, except
that some apps are memory hogs and a bit slow on my 128 meg RAM setup.
I.e., you may want to throw in another memory stick.

1. Another computer maker with Linux pre-installed.

http://www.forbes.com/technology/newswire/2002/10/10/rtr748050.html

It starts, in the competitive world of the PC market price of the PC is
important to MANY people. Any PC maker that install MS OS's and want to
compete on price will find it more and more difficult to compete with
computers that that have Linux as an OS. Until Windows gives their OS a
Windows OS will ALWAYS be an additional cost to the maker, which gets
passed on to the buyer, that a Linux computer maker does not have to pay.
