HOW configure DNS

Post by Angel Beld » Tue, 30 Dec 1997 04:00:00

I have an ISDN conection. It's working, but in my browser I only can open
addresses in IP format (195.77.31.34), but I can't open addresses in URL
format (www.netscape.com).
How I must configure my /etc/named.boot?
Can I check an external DNS with nslookup? How?
                                                        Thanks

Hi,

call your ISP for the adress of their nameserver.
it will be aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd

you need to edit the file /etc/resolve.conf
it need to be:

domain tissat.es
nameserver aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd

voila!

Greetz,
Joop

Well, check the DNS-Howto, it is not too clear but helps. I remember
having hard times configuring my dns. 'man named'also helps. Unfortunatly
it is a complex topic, I can not give a clear answer here, it's too long.
As for nslookup - 'server aaaa' when inside, it's writen in the man page.

                                Hope this helps. George.

You don't need to do that. You are missing the numbers of your DNS servers
in /etc/resolv.conf. Just edit resolv.conf and enter something similar to
this:

domain ne.mediaone.net
nameserver 24.128.52.6
nameserver 24.128.44.6

Angel -

Unless you are going to provide services to some other machine, you might
as well set yourself up as a pure client.

Don't create a /etc/named.boot.  Don't start named.  Create a /etc/resolv.conf
file with the following stuff:

domain <your-domain-name>
nameserver <ip-address-of-your-primary-nameserver>
nameserver <ip-address-of-your-secondary-nameserver>

Good Luck

how can you find a nameserver without asking your ISP?

There is no reason why your ISP should withhold this info.

Ask someone else.  Most nameservers are not too fussy about who uses
them.

The ISP's nameservers used to service custommers' recursive DNS
queries are often (although not necessarily) the same namservers to be
used by the outside world to resolve DNS for the ISP's domain.  This
means you can usually simply ask DNS itself.

So... you appear to be an aol custommer.  DNS shows that the
nameservers for the domain aol.com are dns-02.aol.com (152.163.199.56)
and dns-01.aol.com (152.163.199.42).  Hey!  Wait a minuite - those are
both on the same subnet, isn't that illegal?  Anyhow I've just tried
and sure enough dns-01 does accept recursive queries.
