Iomega Zip 250 parallel port drive.

Iomega Zip 250 parallel port drive.

Post by Alex Schlu » Sat, 24 Jul 1999 04:00:00

I'm having a spot of bother installing an Iomega Zip 250 parallel port
drive. I've been through all the HowTos etc...

My configuration is as follows :

Red Hat Linux release 6.0 (Hedwig)
Kernel 2.2.5-15 on an i686

I believe that all the relevant SCSI support and the imm module are
loaded as they should be. When I try and mount the disk however I get
the following message :

mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/sda4 as a block device
(maybe `insmod driver'?)

When I try and format a disk I get the following :

Unable to open /dev/sda4

I would be very grateful for any tips or help with this.

Alex Schlup.

No solution, but similar problem.

I have SuSE 5.3, kernel 2.0.35, LPT1 has printer, ZIP on LPT2.
2 SCSI disks as /sda, /sdb; ZIP is /sdc.
ZIP 100 parallel works fine.
Yesterday i bought a ZIP 250 parallel.

insmod ppa gives the error message
"2.0.35/scsi/ppa0 init-module: Device or resource busy"
mount /dev/sdc4 clearly does not work.

Do I need a different/updated driver for ZIP 250?

I remeber reading somewhere to try other device numbers? eg sda1.
Sorry, can't remember where, I've read so many READMEs, HOW-TOs,
MINI-HOW-TOs, FAQs, and newsgroup posting in the last few months, trying
to master this linux (although it has been fun (and satisfying, more than
MS Windoze))

Try 'insmod imm'.

Thank you.
In the meanwhile I read the ZIP mini howto
(maybe I should have done that before),
and they also say that I have to use imm.
imm was not insatalled on my system,
but it was a work of only a few minutes
to download, compile and install imm.

Thats great - it is really hot plugable.
No reboot needed, and my ZIP 250 works fine.

Thanks for all the help. I was assuming that the problem lay with my
configuration of Linux (being a relative newcomer), however having read
your messages I decided it was either my drive or the PC. It turns out
that the parallel port on the (new) PC was disabled! It's always too
easy not to check for the obvious.

Hi Folks,

Just a guess, but you do realize that a parallel ZIP drive is not SCSI,
don't you????

1. Please help: RedHat6.0 Iomega 250 Parallel Zip install and config

Hi:

reply on ng.

I am totally new to Linux, have to say that I really love it alot more
than Windows!!!!   However, since I am new I don't know how to config
hardware....I really hope that someone outthere can help me with
installing, config and mounting with Iomega's ext 250M Parallet Port Zip
drive.  I had gone through many many pages of HOW TO and still can't
find the answer at all.

Here is a simple list of hardware I have and hope it helps.

ASUS BX 440 MB, Celeron 300A, Viper770 V-card etc (don't know if any of
these will help)
Only 1 HD on IDE1
2 CD ROM (but only can mount the primary but I don't need the second
one) on IDE2
No scsi card, no printer, Lan connection which works fine.  And floppy
and cdrom works fine mount and umount *cdrom is hp8110i but can't set it
to writer yet.  Still need help on that too*

There is no /dev/sda4 .. line in my fstab file yet and my boot up sweep
so fast that I can't catch whether the boot up recognize my zip drive or
not.
I already have the line as  ppa host.... etc from the manual in my
conf.modules file

When I do a insmode ppa I see about 5 lines of something.. I am at work
now so I can't type out but if someone is willing to read what I got in
there I can do a capture at home.  However those 5 lines doesn't seems
to be anything associate with parallel port.

/mnt/zip is created

when I try to do a mount -t vfat (or msdos) /dev/sba4 /mnt I receive an
error saying something like the block is not recognized ro something
(will also do a capture to follow up)

Currently there is no entry in the fstab file for the like "/dev/sda4
/zip vfat user,noauto 0 0"  should I add that manually?

I tried to download the imm and zipplus drivers .. no luck becasue when
doing a make it can't find any /usr/src/linux/.config ... etc

what else am I missing?  Please tell me in more detail step since I am a
rookie on this...

If someone is successful setting up the iomega 250 parallel drive  on
Redhat 6 (or even the 100M which I assume works the same)
please share this with me....

btw, I also have trouble setting my hp8110i (current cdrom) as a CD
writer ....if anyone did that with Redhat 6 please also let me know

Many many thanks to you all if I can get my Zip and Cd writer to work!!!
=)
