single NIC, multiple IP addresses

single NIC, multiple IP addresses

I'm sure this is covered in a FAQ or HOWTO somewhere, but I can't find it. If it
is, please point me to the appropriate docs and accept my appologies.

I need for a web server to host multiple "home" pages. The logical way to do
that (I think) is to assign multiple IP addresses to the machine's single NIC.
How? Can ifconfig assign more than one IP address to device eth0, or do I need
to create a new device eth1 that has the same MAC address as eth0? Surely this
is pretty simple...

Hi Bruce,
Yes it is pretty simple. There are more ways than this
but you can use the Control Panel / Network config
program and make the aliases you want there or use the
Linuxconf IP aliases for virtual hosts under the Server
Tasks section of the tree.

Hope this helps.

1. Single NIC, Multiple IP Addresses.

I have a situation where I need to assign multiple IP addresses to a single
network adapter, 1st of all, because of IP based virtual web hosting with
Apache and second of all, I have a need to run multiple FTP services on the
same FBSD3 machine. I had this configured with RedHat Linux 5.1, but I have
not found a way to configure FBSD3-R to do the same. Is this possible with
FBSD3 or should I turn my machine back to Redhat 5.1??

Any help here would be greatly appreciated!!!
