Need help to setup a CD-ROM Writer Through a SCSI externail port.

Post by Asmode » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

Hi all,
I have a question on how to set up an externail SCSI CD-ROM wrtier for
a linux box running Mandrake 7.1
the questions that I have are as follows:
What hardware device do I mount the writer to? (/dev/?)
do I make a directory for the writer?           (/mnt/writer)
and what software is the best for this job

the second part of the question is this:
Can linux write to HPUX format (assuming that HPUX uses its own format
for cd-roms)

Thanks for any help in Advance.
Martin.

this will tell you the device nubmers:

cdrecord -scanbus

i think mine was /dev/sg0  you don't mount the device. the kernel does
it. you simply send data to that device.

cdrecord works for me. read CD Writing HOWTO from linuxdoc.org

don't know. what does the kernel configuration script say?

Not wanting to sound stupid but how does the kernel configuration script
affect the format of a device? I though that linux supported reading and
writing of many formats? Or do I have to configure this kind of behivour
my self?

Linux supports several different filesystems through kernel modules.
I'm not sure what type of filesystem HPUX uses, but you could look at
the different options available in the kernel sources.

1. SCSI CDR+CD-ROM setup help needed (off-topic)

[ Article crossposted from linux.debian.user ]

[ Posted on 9 May 99 17:04:53 GMT ]

Since you say the CDR is terminated, I'm assuming it's last on the SCSI
chain. The "Term Power" jumper on the CDR is the jumper that sets
termination on or off on the device.  With that jumper shorted, the CDR
is a terminating device on the chain, so in your current setup, it
should be the last device on the SCSI chain.  The "Parity" jumper sets
SCSI parity to on or off.  If your SCSI card supports parity, and has
worked fine in the past, i would leave it on.  Your CD-ROM probably has
similar jumpers on it.

One thing you may want to check is to make sure adding the CD-ROM didn't
change any of your devices (shouldn't have, but it never hurst to
check.).  You may also want to check to make sure your CD-ROM isn't
terminated (again, if it's not the last device on the chain).  And you
may also want to check your your burner software to be sure the rc files
aren't looking to try to burn to the reader.

Hope that helps at least a little...:-)

John
