Tape drives for Linux

Post by mkmacv.. » Fri, 02 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Does anyone know whether the following SCSI Seagate tape drives will
work on Linux?
(1) Scorpion STD224000N - DDS-3 DAT 12/24MB
(2) Hornet STD220000  -  TRAVAN-5 10/20GB

(These are the 2 options Dell currently give for their Precision
workstations if you order them with Windows, but they can't commit
themselves as to whether they would work with Linux and so don't offer
anything if you order a machine with Linux!)

                        Many thanks in anticipation

I have an AIWA NS20 which is pretty much the same as the Hornet and it
works quite well. I suspect just about any SCSI tape will be fine.

No experience with Travan, but i've used a DDS-1 from HP and a DDS-2
from Archive and they both worked fine. I think most scsi tape-drives
will work.

Im having reasonable  success with a Seagate TapeStor  8GB with Travan
tapes using  GNU tar.  I  just have to  be sure to verify  the created
archives  which I  usually  do by  running  index listing  on the  the
included files.  See the info pages on tar if interested.

1. Seagate's TapeStor 8GB SCSI DAT Tape Drive and Linux 1.2.39

Anyone have any experiences installing and running this Seagate tape
drive off of an Adaptech AHA2940 SCSI controller on Linux 1.2.39?
Specifically its Seagate product # STD280000N.

I'd appreciate any and all input.  Thanks

Cheers,
