LILO problem; Win95 exists + >500 MB harddrives + ontrack

First off let me apologize for being an aol user. I am switching.

I have a 1 gig win 95 quantum c drive, a 3.2 gig quantum d drive the is
free to be used as needed.

i have a 500 MB first partition on D to boot linux from.

Unfortunately my D drive(which I just got) came with ontrack software that
allows me to use greater than 500 MB drives.
The ontrack banner needs to load before anything else. After that it gives
me a boot to floppy option.

I wrote lilo to MBR on C: but it hangs with LI   unless I manage to load
ontrack first.
One way I can do this is to have the non- boot ontrack disk in the floppy
when I start. That magically manages to load ontrack and then gives me the
non system disk message after which i take out the floppy and everything
is fine! Lilo works.

How to I get the stupid ontrack to load before lilo?
Is that the problem?

I format my d drive with ontrack software.

I then reformat the partitions that i want to be linux during linux
installation (red hat 4.2).

Good choice.

Use loadlin to load linux, forget lilo.

Linux doesn't need the Ontrack software, I had an 850, that
needed the s/w for Dos/Win to see >500, but I give Dos/Win
the first 200-300, and give Linux the rest, no Ontrack needed.
Or you can give linux the first 40-50MB, Dos/Win the rest
that they can see, and the rest to Linux, Linux just needs
the booting kernel to be below the first some odd cylinders
(1024 I think).

I'd just take off the ontrack.  In fact I did.

1. do EIDE drives(>500 MB) work in Linux

I am thinking of buying a 1 GB Western Digital IDE drive, but someone told me
that IDE drives have a max. limit of 500 MB and that this drive is an Extended
IDE drive. Does Linux support this type of drive?
