Linux Video Capture Configuration

Linux Video Capture Configuration

Post by David Simpso » Fri, 30 Jan 1998 04:00:00

I am starting to plan out a linux box that needs to support a TV Tuner/
Video Capture card and a web cam application. I have done this on Win95 but
never Linux. Anybody have a clue as to what card/driver/application will do
this? I probably will use RedHat unless someone has contrary advise. I also
have leftover ATI PC 2 TV and Aver TVPHONE cards from another project.

Take a look at the bttv drivers that drive all the BT848 based cards like
the Happauge win/tv pci. These are in the kernel as of 2.1.78 or so

I tried talking to ATI about supporting their TV cards and they don't
seem to care. Since the other vendors are quite happy to be nice I'd suggest
picking up a hauppauge win/tv pci or a miro or similar.

I don't know whats in an Aver TVPHONE.

As far as I know, there is no application available yet to read the TV input
on video cards.  I have an ATI All-in-Wonder, and the vid capture
capabilities are not even being used.  Sorry, I couldn't give you a better
answer.

ATI refuse to let anyone know how to program their stuff. I'd suggest
avoiding ATI products. The numerous other TV in a window cards are mostly
supported - Hauppauge wintv/pci, Miro, STB etc...

Im using an S3 card and a Happauge wintv/pci under Linux and Im very happy
with them

With reference to Video Capture cards, I have a Matrox Rainbow Runner card.

Does anyone have any information for linux support on this card, or _HOW_ to
support the card?

IE: contacts within Matrox ta talk to etc?

Thanks!

The sticker on the side of the box said "Supported Platforms: Windows 95,
Windows NT 4.0, or better", so clearly Linux was a supported platform.
