setup problems

Hi ..
I read every how-to on how to configure my cable modem to run with red-hat
linux 6.0 and it still doesn't work.
I really need some help.
I have few questions
1) how can I know if my network card is working?
2)On startup I get APM Daemon failed , what is APM Daemon?
3)How can I reconfigure my desktop because the background it only taking 70%
of my monitor the rest is blank?

Any help would be really appreciated.
Thank You

1. printer problem or setup problem ?

I have a problem with printer which simply didn't print.
I did run /usr/sbin/lpd  and  I checked lpc:

lpc> status
lp:
        queuing is enabled
        printing is enabled
        no entries
        no daemon present
laser:
        queuing is enabled
        printing is enabled
        1 entry in spool area
waiting for pslaser to become ready (offline ?)

What does "waiting for pslaser to become ready (offline ?)" mean
anyway. Could someone tell me how to print to printer laser.
Thank you in advance.
