IBM 360CSE setup

IBM 360CSE setup

Post by cwhidd » Fri, 28 Apr 1995 04:00:00

I have set up Linux on my home PC without any problems.  I am now trying
to install it on my laptop, an IBM 360CSE.  I've created the boot and
root disks using rawrite.  I'm using the scsi and color144 programs.  I
boot with the boot floppy and its works fine.  The prompt for the root
disk appears and after inserting the root disk and pressing return the
following message appears:

VFS: Disk change detected on device 2/28
VFS: Insert root floppy and press Enter

I press enter again,

VFS:Disk change detected on device 2/28
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 02:1c

And the PC freezes up.  I can't seem to find any reference to VFS errors
and I have tried the tty144 program also.

Thank you for you help in advance.

Welcome to the Club!
Have the same problem here with a 360C when trying standard boot&root

I have tried the special Thinkpad boot (peipa.essex.ac.uk/tp-linux something...)
with **good** results, if you don't forgot to switch the diskettes
when you have the "uncompressing Linux" ...
(The tp-bare.gz is available here at ftp.cng2.hydro.qc.ca/pub/blangevin )

The only problem for me is that I want to access an NFS machine to
do the download, but that tp-bare is not PCMCIA aware ;-(

If someone know the way, please post here!

1. Redhat 6.0 on an IBM thinkpad 360CSE?

Hello Everybody,

I just picked up an IBM Thinkpad 360CSE and installed Redhat 6.0 on it.  I
got around the floppy problem with using "linux floppy=thinkpad" on boot and
did an FTP install using a 3Com etherlink pcmcia card.

The install went fine except for the Xconfigurator part.  I selected WD90C24
and custom 640x480 generic monitor.  When X does it's probe the screen gets
screwy and I have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot.  I've looked around at the
various linux thinkpad websites without any results.  Any help?

Also, any idea on how to get sound?  The only positive comment i've seen is
to boot dos, load the drivers, use loadlin and select for soundblaster.

TIA,
Jeff Volckaert
