RH 5.0 doesn't recognize IDE CD ROM drive

Post by George Brow » Sat, 31 Jan 1998 04:00:00

I have just installed RH 5.0 from their CD ROM distribution on a P200
MMX.  Cool but for one thing!  Now that its installed, it doesn't
recognize my CD ROM drive (model CD-912E/ATK).  /dev/cdrom is a link to
/dev/hdc.  When I try to mount, I get:
the kernel does not recognize /dev/cdrom as a block device
       (maybe 'insmod' driver?)

The fstab entry looks like:
   /dev/cdrom   /mnt/cdrom      iso9660 noauto,ro  0  0

The only way I could get the CD ROM RH 5.0 installed was to boot a
Windows 95 Setup disk into DOS mode, go to E:\dosutils and AUTOBOOT.
Booting the Linux boot floppy that came with boxed Linux did not
recognize the CD ROM drive (that should have been my first clue of
trouble 8-(  I have two internal IDE hard drives, the first has Windows
95 on it and the second has the Linux partitions.   The CD ROM is IDE
also.

When I boot the the Windows 95 Setup disk, it identifies the CD ROM as:
ATAPI CD ROM Device Driver v1.51 (1.28/96)
   (c) Mitsumi Electric Corp. 1994-1996
   1 drives detected
       unit 0, MASTER, IRQ 15, I/O addr 0x0170

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated as my Linux system is virtually
useless to me without a CD ROM drive.  So far radio silence from RH
support - but I'm registered and submitted my ticket.

RH 5.0 doesn't recognize IDE CD ROM drive

Post by Bond Masud » Sat, 31 Jan 1998 04:00:00

I'm having a similar problem here.... when I try to install RH5 from the
CDROM it doesn't allow me to choose the IDE CDROM as the manual suggests.
The only options i have are SCSI, and OTHER. The CDROM is an IDE ATAPI
compliant 2x from NEC manufactured in 1994. I figure it's old enough to be
supported... or is it too old??

The way I was proceeding was to boot with a Windows95 boot disk which does
nothing but gets me to the command prompt and loads the CDROM driver
NEC_IDE.SYS. I then switch to the CDROM drive and start AUTOBOOT.BAT .

I would greatly appreciate any help here.... otherwise I'll be forced to
copy everything to my HardDisk first.... which is very slow with a 2x ....
Thanks to anyone who can help me...

well, I've found a truble like this in FreeBSD too.. and I think it
could be for the same reason..
Could be your IDE CD is attached on the secondary controler bus?? When I
met this I made it work attaching it as slave.. I think linux and other
unix's can't find it if it is not in the same controler where you have a
HD.

the first you should look at is the boot messages. does your kernel
recognize the cdrom at all. if not you should refer to the tip above.
otherwise you should try out "/dev/hdc" instead of "/dev/cdrom

RH 5.0 doesn't recognize IDE CD ROM drive

Post by Fl » Wed, 04 Feb 1998 04:00:00

Well, I thought I was crazy - I've got the same problem. I get an error
message saying "hdc: no response (status=0xd0)".
When I run AUTOBOOT.BAT, it sees the CDROM but then I get a bunch of other
errors that dont allow me to proceed with the installation. Also, like others
here, I don't get an IDE entry for CDROM type, only SCSI and Other.
I have a Dell XPS D300 PII with two hard drives, a Memorex ATAPI CDROM and a
Zip Disk internal drive. I have tried changing the jumpers on the CDROM and
the Zip disk but still nothing. I'm using RH 5.0.

Any ideas? Redhat are you reading this?

This *could* be an IRQ problem.

Right now the CDROM is set for CSEL and I've tried master and slave. Since it
works fine under Windows I have to rule out an IRQ prob. Also, the boot up
sequence in RH says the primary and secondary IDE's are on IRQ 14 and 15. This
is correct.

I'm gonna try putting the CDROM on the same side as one of the hard drives.
Right now the two hard drives are on one side of the controller (IDE0?).

It would appear that this is a common problem with their disks/distribution.
Under RedHat 4.0 with a recompiled kernel <2.0.33> my cdrom works fine, as
does it when i boot <gasp> into windoze. Yet when i try and boot with these
disks i get the hdd: no resonse (status=0xd0)" messagfe as well

To the original poster: do you have to go into windows to get th drive to
reset itself? if i boot from the disks, on subsequent boots to linux it wont
recognize the drive anymore at all. Strange things are a goin' on

I looked into this, and on my particular system this isn't the case, as it
works fine under all other OSes.

Good plan.  I'd suggest making the HDD the master and the CD-ROM the
slave.

By the way, please don't bother CC:ing me by email if you are not
going to provide a valid return address in that mail.

No sorry.. This is not correct...
my cdrom is mount on the secondary controller bus, like slave without
master (ok: hdd but without hdc).
this is my 2c.

1. RH 5.0 boot disk doesn't recognize CD-ROM; what to do?

Hello all,

I am trying to install Red Hat 5.0 on an old 486. I have the installation
CD, but when the boot disk comes to the ``select installation medium''
step, it doesn't recognize the CD-ROM, which is a Creative PC2 CD-ROM.

I wonder what is my best course of action. I see a couple of options.

(1) Get a newer CD-ROM, perhaps made by someone with a little more market
  share, like Sony.

(2) Get a newer Red Hat distribution.

(3) Get a different distribution.

(4) Try to find a CD-ROM driver for the Creative CD-ROM, and put that
  on the boot disk.

Can anyone tell me which of these options is best? Or you might have
a completely different suggestion -- I'm all ears, so to speak.

Thanks very much in advance for any light you can shed on this problem.
