NT Box Dead

Post by Stan » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

Hi,

It gives me pleasure to announce that another rogue NT box has been
disabled, and it's vital organs are about to go towards a spanking Linux
server.

Is it possible to enable Windows 95/98/NTW machines to log onto and share
from a Redhat Linux box?  My aim is to install Perl on the Linux server and
to provide experimental scripts to both the RS232 getty shells, and over a
TCP/IP network segment and an IPX/SPX segment(x86 machines running DOS
NetTamer).

Really what I need to do is to get Linux up and on the net for ftp etc. as
soon as possible.  How do I do this?  My ISP is Pipex and I simply have a
logon username and password (no fancy clutter), PPP.  Is it straight
forward and reasonably self explanatory?

Many thanks,

Stan

Woohoo!

Use Samba - I have it set-up to serve Windows 9x boxes, giving a Domain
Logon, and running NT logon scripts. For NT, its a bit more compilcated,
and beta - the help is pretty good, however.

Be careful here!  Make sure you know exactly which pieces of hardware
are bad.  An NT box with a bad piece of HW will probably just BSOD on
you.  An linux box with a bad piece of HW will subtly put you through
hell.

Stan, a search of deja for 'diald' in forum 'pipex.dialup' will give you
details of how to connect to Pipex.

Maybe true enough, but then I had an NT box which was BSODing me
continually, even when I was doing a completely clean re-install... gave
me no clue whatsover as to the problem - spent hours (on and off) on it!
Booted a Redhat CD, which immediately told me I had SCSI parity errors,
swapped out the cable, and happy computer.

As far as the sharing, look at Samba services for the linux box. There may be a
few gotchas concerning NT domain services, plus encrypted passwords, but other
than that I have a linux box as a shared system (file, print, and autodial
internet) setup at the house sharing with a dual-boot win98/linux machine,
another machine (that currently is waiting for a replacement disk), and a
laptop.
