Slackware96 /dev/console

Slackware96 /dev/console

Post by James E. Field » Fri, 10 Jan 1997 04:00:00

This may be an old problem already but I bought a new computer and quit
using Linux for about 4 months thinking I would be happy with win95,
well I was wrong.
I got the InfoMagic Linux Developer's Resource(Sept 96) version and
installed and started Slack96 with out a problem, the problem comes in
when I try to use X or supervgalib I get a /dev/console I think it was
not found.  Was there a bug in this release and is there a fix so that I
can once again start using the GREATEST OS of all time?
Thanks for any help with this.
Jim

You'll have to make /dev/console yourself:

  cd /dev
  MAKEDEV console

It's a broken 'feature' of slak96, may have
bee fixed by now though.

1. >/dev/msglog 2<>/dev/msglog </dev/console

In inittab, some entry is entitled with ">/dev/msglog 2<>/dev/msglog
</dev/console",  what is that used for? Why need it followed by the
standard entry?

Such as

The following example shows an annotated default inittab file:
