Problem with IDE hd

Post by Andrew J Mccread » Sun, 01 Dec 1996 04:00:00

I just installed Redhat 4 on my new machine, and I get the following error:

hdb: dma_intr: status=0x51 { Drive Ready SeekComplete Error }
hdb: dma_intr: error-0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=2886562,
sector=1245471

Actually, I get alot of these, of course with different LBAsect's and
sector numbers. I thought I saw a post about this a few months back, and
the answer was to disable the LBA in the bios and let linux handle the
lba itself. However, for some reason AMI has decided not to give you the
choice of disableing LBA in it's bios.

This is on a PPro200 from dell. This occurs with both the stock 2.0.18
that comes with redhat, and with a 2.0.26 that I just compiled, but I don't
the the problem is the kernel.

Any ideas? Thanks, Andrew

1. install problem - large IDE HD

Hi,

I recently bought a 1Gig WD IDE HD and decided, since I now have more
room (upgraded from a 110M) I would install linux on my 486SX/33.

I made the boot & root disks (IDECD & COLOR144) and I can boot into
the setup phase, when I type 'setup' I get the error :

--
ERROR: no linux native partitions
--

running linux fdisk I then get the following:

--
DISK /dev/hda :16 heads, 63 sectors, 2100 cylinders
units=cylinders of 1008*512 bytes

DEVICE     BOOT  BEGIN  START   END   BLOCKS   ID   SYSTEM
/dev/hda1   *     1      1     2099  1057895+  54   UNKNOWN
partition 1 does not start on cylinder boundary:
      phys(0,0,2) should be (0,1,1)
--

but when I run msdos fdisk I get:

--
PARTITION    STATUS   TYPE   VOLUME LABEL  MBYTES   SYSTEM   USAGE
C: 1            A   PRI DOS  DISK1_VOL1     640      FAT16    62%
   2                EXT DOS                 193               19%

total diskspace is 1032 Mbytes
--

I have left the other 200M for linux but cannot seem to get linux to
recognise the disk.

To access > 512M of the drive I am using DISK MANAGER by Ontrack
Computer Systems (Western Digital Dynamic Drive Overlay V6.03C) and I'm
guessing that it does some fooling around with the partition table so
that my BIOS can access the drive. The BIOS is AMIBIOS 11/11/92.

I have an EIDE multi-io card with the 1Gig & 110M on the primary, and a
CD-ROM on the secondary controller.

I am installing LINUX VERSION 1.2.8 with SLACKWARE 2.3.0 off CD-ROM
August 1995 release.

I hope that someone can help me...
