Compiling a Kernel...

Post by Dedicated to all Manson Fan » Wed, 14 Feb 2001 23:39:31

After two packages of cigarettes, many bottles of beer and no progress I
have to to scream for help. I try to compile a new Kernel (2.4.1) and
there seems to be no way to get it to an acceptable size. The biggest I
got was about 2.2 MB the smallest about 1.4 MB
I need Samba, vfat (for Fat32), TCP/IP, PPP, a running X-Server,
loopback-devices and my CS4232 ISA-PNP-Sound card (with OPL3 I think).
I've no SCSI, all drives are IDE/ATAPIs. There's also a
standard-no-name-isa-modem (non-PNP) and a QIC-80 Tape drive I want to
use (The modem is a must). The rest is as usual (Floppy, ...)
I'd like to have the matrox acceleration for my mystique, the support
of the Pentium/MMX and Fat16 support. This should be all now.
I'll attach my .config so you probably can tell me what's wrong.
If you have a .config, please send it to me.

Thank you very much...

and to compile you did the 'make bzImage' to create the kernel?

Do you build with make bzImage?

Yes I did. But it didn't help...

I did it by the command 'make bzlilo'. This causes lilo to refuse the kernel
registartion because of the size.  I already compiled modules as much as
possible (as far I know).  I' ve no idea to build a smaller kernel for my
system and the things I do with it. Can anyone tell me which part uses the
most memory. There are about 400 kB too much...

I took the .config file you posted and used it to compile the 2.4.1
kernel here on my RH7 machine. It compiled to a kernel file that was
462,244 bytes (approx. 450k) big.

Is it possible that the file you're saying is too large is
/usr/src/linux/vmlinux? If so, that might be the problem.
That is not the file you should be using... the bootable kernel
built by "make bzImage" and/or "make bzlilo" is the file
/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage and is a compressed
kernel.

Try using that file as your bootable kernel image.

By the way, I got an error message when compiling drivers/video/fonts.c
that said "no fonts specified". I got rid of it by selecting one of
the video card drivers under the DRI selection (the Help file for
the DRI selection says that you have to select one of the card-specific
drivers for inclusion in the kernel if you include DRI).

Hope this helps.

Compiling a Kernel...

I would suhhest that you try make bzImage instead of make zImage, that
way you get a compressed kernel with a reasonable size. Mine (2.4.1)
came out at 850 kb (with all the netfilter modules made)

good luck

1. compile new kernel => compile new iptables ?

just installed a new kernel and iptable stopped working.
I get the following error:

# iptables  -F FORWARD
iptables v1.2.4: can't initialize iptables table `filter': Module is wrong
version
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

having kernel2.4.16 and iptables 1.2.4.  I check googles and the
netfilter-docs and the postings in googles says that this is, if iptables
wasnt compiled against the recent kernel and the netfilter-install needs
the kernel-sources in every step.

somehow this doesnt make sense to me. The netfilter-modules are included
with the kernel-sources and therefore change at every new kernel, but why
should I be forced to compile a new iptables-binary ever time I update my
kernel ?

thnx,
peter
