A Simple Question

If /usr/src/Linux 2.0.0 does not have anything in it (except a sub
directory called include/ does that mean I can not buid my kernal? I have
tried typing make config several times and nothing happens. I am using
SlackWare 96 from PHT.  Since I am new to Linux I have no doubt that it
is something I have done wrong.
TIA
John

Obviously you are missing the kernel sources.

Install the disk set "K" or even better get the latest production kernel
2.0.28 from funet, sunsite, tsx11 or your favorite ftp-site.

You need to install kernel sources. Slackware should have a kernel
source package, but it will not be as current as what's available on
the net.

Many ftp archives (sunsite, redhat, cdrom, tsx11, ...) maintain copies
of the kernel sources; they will be in a dir called kernel/2.0 or
something similar. Look for a file that does not have "patch" in the
name, and a version like 2.0.27 or 2.0.28, and a file extention of
.tgz or .tar.gz. Download it and unpack it from /usr/src, then cd to
linux, make config and you're on your way!

You need the kernel source; you have the `include' part OK, just not
the rest of it (this is commonly done so that other programs which rely
on definitions specific to the Linux kernel can be compiled).

There will be a Slackware module with the kernel source in it, or you
can ftp the latest one from somewhere
(eg. sunsite.unc.edu:/pub/Linux).

Hope that helps,
Paul.
