Has anyone gotten Real-Audio 3.0 working on Linux ?

Post by Andrew M. Sarang » Mon, 21 Apr 1997 04:00:00

I am trying to install real-audio on my Linux 2.0.27 machine.
It is a slackware 3.0 installation running on a 486 machine.

I downloaded realaudio 3.0, and installed it. When I tried to play
the welcome.ra message, all I got was lots of noise in my speakers.

Then I found that one needs a OSS sound driver. I hunted around and
found the OSS driver. It turns out that I had to recompile my
kernel with sound as a module. I recompiled it, and then installed
OSS driver. Still I get the noise as before. No changes.

Any ideas what is going on ?

Why does RealAudio need the OSS sound driver ? What is wrong with the
sound driver I have on my kernel already ? Everything else seems to
work well with that sound driver, except this RealAudio.

Nope.  But it worked first time on my RedHat 4.1.  Same kernel
as yours (recently upgraded as a set of .RPM's from a sunsite mirror).
Genuine Creative Labs SB16, hooked up standalone and as a helper (not
plugin) for Netscape Gold 3.

Sorry I can't be more specific about the OSS, whatever that is, but
it does work; hope that information encourages you not to give up.

I use the same kernel with Gravis Ultrasound. No problem at all, but I have some
cheap SB Pro (OPTI something) clone at work and it works just like yours.
So, I think that something must be wrong with sound card.

It's quite likely that your card, despite its better nature, will
only work as an 8bit device with the Realaudio.  I downloaded it
for kicks TODAY and had the same problem, but the Preferences/Advanced
tab has a setting for supressing the 16 bit audio.  Sounded much more
civilized after doing so.

I can't comment as to whether the 'problem' is a problem or not, but I
know my card can handle 16 bit sound in the other OS...
