eg fault with taper6.7.4

Post by Thomas Zenke » Thu, 14 May 1998 04:00:00

Hi all,

got a little problem with taper6.7.4.
I'm running SuSE5.2 and I want to backup to my SCSI ZIP drive with
taper6.7.4 (the one that comes with SuSE5.2)
It gave me no problems with 2 filesystems but now, trying to backup the
/usr partition the following happens:

I mark all dirs under /usr for backup (with 's').
Then, with 'F' I tell taper to backup.
He starts and does more or less 15% of backup then he stops with a popup
window 'Write child seg faulted'
I confirm with ok (in fact there is no other choice) and it gives me a
second massage wich disappears to fast for me to read. Anyway it says
something about '....too big.......'

I read documentation but it only says that seg faults may occur if you
have recursive links, but I already checked that with taper.

Thanks for any help
ciao

I know now what the problem is but I didn't solve it. The error occurs
when the zip disk is full. It backs up 99MB and then instead of telling
me to change disk, gives me 'Write child seg faulted'.
The manpage says something about special terminations at the end of the
backup medium but I didn't get that right.
Also I tried with --tape-size 99 but not change.

I hope someone can help me
Thanx

1. taper-6.7.4 backup error: "Write child seg faulted"

I am running linux2.0.17, zftape 1.06 (with patch zftape-1.06-1.06a.dif)
and taper-6.7.4. My tape drive is a Conner 250MB/420MB Internal
Minicartridge Drive (I couldn't seem to find the model number), and
I'm using a QIC-WIDE (QW5122F) tape.

I selected a single filesystem (/home) for backup, and it's size
was determined to be:
"Selected files 394,913K"
"   I    394,913K /home/ "

After selecting this, taper then: "Adding to archive directory..."
Taper then starts the backup, but never makes it to writing to the tape:
"Write child seg faulted"

"tail taper_log" shows:

Fri Sep 13 18:14:06 1996:  Storing directory /home/tsg/nsmail/
Fri Sep 13 18:14:06 1996:  Backing up file /home/tsg/.addressbook;
actual size 1847, on tape size 1389.
Fri Sep 13 18:14:06 1996:  Backing up file /home/tsg/.addressbook.lu;
actual size 3090, on tape size 1429.
Fri Sep 13 18:14:06 1996:  Backing up file /home/tsg/.signature; actual
size 140, on tape size 131.
Fri Sep 13 18:14:19 1996:  Backing up file /home/tsg/g3230p.exe; actual
size 5955072, on tape size 5955072.
Fri Sep 13 18:14:20 1996:  W: Child Segmentation fault
Fri Sep 13 18:14:21 1996:  Write child seg faulted
Fri Sep 13 18:16:14 1996:  Backup finished.

Any ideas what might be causing this, or what I need to investigate
to track down the problem?

Thanks in advance,
Dave
