Kernel Panic: VFS : UNable to mount root fs on 08: 08

Post by Ja » Thu, 26 Jun 2003 13:19:14

Hello,

I did a kernel recompilation .

These are the step i followed

make mrproper
make distclean
make oldconfig
make menuconfig
make dep
make bzImage
cp System.map /boot/System.map-2.2.16-22a
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-22a
make modules

make modules_install

When i try to bring up the system I get the following problem.

lib/megaraid.o: kernel-module version mismatch
/lib/jbd.o: kernel-module version mismatch
/lib/ext3.o: kernel-module version mismatch

VFS: cannot open root device "sda8" or 08: 08
PLease append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08: 08.

PLease throw some light.

Thanks Jayshankar

make mrproper  # this removes the old config file.
make menuconfig
make dep
make clean
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install

You did not tell us, how you boot. Which boot manager
do you use. Do you use lilo or grub? Your error messages
indicate that you are not booting the right kernel for
the modules, you installed. That happens after installing
new modules for the Linux version but a differently configured kernel.

You forgot to make install!  You may also have to pass the I/O address
of that scsi drive to lilo at boot time.

Kernel Panic: VFS : UNable to mount root fs on 08: 08

I am using grub at boot time. In the grub.conf , also i have
specified.
root=/dev/sda8 . IT points to /. Is there any other way to specify
scsi address.
Also how can i specify the correct kernel(i think only maintenance
needs to be done in grub.conf file).

# grub.conf file
default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Red Hat Linux (2.4.18-14)
        root (hd0,0)
        kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.18-14 ro root=/dev/sda8
        # kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.18-14 ro root=LABEL=/
        initrd /initrd-2.4.18-14.img

PLease suggest.

Thanks

With grub you get a set of options when you choose which OS to boot.
Here you can put in <params> at the boot: prompt.  You need something
like sda8=<channel>,<id>,<lun>. There is probably a HOWTO over at
tldp.org.
