Help : Debian 1.3.1 kernel 2.0.33 recompile

Post by Nick von Sand » Wed, 18 Mar 1998 04:00:00

Hi all,

I just installed Debian 1.3.1 to my friend's new computer; it's a PII with
64M RAM, 4.3 GB HDD, and Diamond Viper 330.

Everything went all nice and smooth until;

1. When I tried to install olvwm package, dselect/dpkg says that it couldn't
be configured. I don't why or how. Could somebody tell me how I could
configure it manually?

2. I downloaded the source for kernel v 2.0.33 and compiled. I followed
the README that came with it, starting from "make config", "make dep"
"make bzlilo (because I expected the kernel image to be large)",
"make modules" then "make modules_install". I didn't have source code
prior to the download, so I set the includes right as well. After
the recompile followed by reboot, it says it cannot find the modules
and I lose connection to the network. Could someone tell me what I'm doing
wrong? I believe it is something to do with module loading, since
it seems that the initially installed kernel (2.0.29) loads up modules
you select at the installation. When I compiled the new kernel, I selected
module autoloading in configuration. When I looked at /lib/modules/2.0.33/
modules.dep, it had only one line of entry and not all the modules I
selected at configuration. I tried with modules disabled hoping that will
compile everything into the kernel, but to no avail. Could someone give
me some advice into what I'm doing wrong please? I'm out of wits now,
after reading all these readmes and how-tos. I would appreciate if I could
get email as well as response on the newsgroup.

Thanks loads in advance.

Cheers,

Makoto

What does dselect/dpkg say? Try 1) install once more and 2) a run of
config. Do this again if 1) installs something and 2) complains.
Maybe olvwm predepends on a package configured, so you have to do it
again.
