Yggdrasil nov 1994 plug and play

Post by Gavin Merce » Wed, 21 Jun 1995 04:00:00

I have the Yggdrasil plug an play linux November 1994 cd-rom and a quad speed
creative drive
1. the boot disk can't find the cdrom drive
2. It says that if the mscdex program is well behaved then you should be able
to use "runlinux" but the machine just  reboots

Does anyone have a well behaved mscdex that will work with the quad speed drive
or does a later version of the plug-and-play handle the quad speed drive ??

Or is there another solution ?

I  was hoping that the cdrom could make the install disks, I could dump these
onto
my dos partition and install from there but I don't think this is possible.

The vendor said I could try it but he said it might not work and that I could
exchange
plug and play for a later version, is this what I have to do and which
plug-and-play
version should I get ???

Looks like we're in the same boat.  I'm curious though, what is
the output when you try runlinux?  This is what I get.

D:\> runlinux
..............................................................................
7=4022

I had the same problem with Yggdrasil not finding my cdrom.
Slackware or Red Hat, with a later kernal will probably find it.
Slackware found mine.  Then I decided to quit fighting it, and bought a
SoundBlaster Pro 16 with cdrom for $199 on sale.  Every Linux I've tried
finds it without problems.
You might try call Yggdrasil, maybe they have a later boot floppy you could try.

I also have the fall '94 Yggdrasil. I have NEVER heard or seen the system
work with the runlinux command. I hace tried on at least 5 different
machines and have concluded it DOES NOT WORK, EVER. Anyone to prove me
wrong ?

runlinux didn't work for me either. Tried all kinds of boot configurations in
config.sys and autoexec.bat. It either hung the system or rebooted.

I am tring to reconfigure the kernel and remove all of the extraneous stuff I
do not need. I can;t seem to find how to compile it and build a new bootable
kernel. I cd'ed to /usr/lib/linux and did a make config, then make dep and
make clean. I then did a make zImage. zImage died with an error 2 and I never
did find a kernel if it built one. I also checked /etc/lilo.cfg ( I think that
is the name) for correct pathnames. Any ideas??

1.      You need to be in the /usr/src/linux directory to compile the kernel.
2.      Get the Kernel-HOWTO from one of the usual (sunsite, tsx-11, etc..)
places.  Also, there may be a README in the same dir.
3.      Confirm the the required links (see #2) are in place.
4.      Try again with the above make ... commands.  Be sure to do the make
        clean.

If you can't get the above docs, or still need more help, drop me a line:

I'm trying to get my Soundblaster16, Adaptec SCSI card and NEC 4x Cdrom working
under linux. I've tried the Q series of boot images and haven't been successful. The HowTo suggests doing a "make config" but somehow I haven't installed the
"make" file.

Help?

: Help?

ok, you need to install the development disks. (the compiler's and
libraries and such)

what the how-to was telling you, was that you need to install the kernel
source, and configure your own custom-made-for-your-machine kernel.

once, the development disks have been installed (just need gcc263, include,
libc, gmake, binutils, lx???_1, lx???_2, lx???_3 (ie *all* the kernel source
from one
kernel number, not a good thing to install more than one set of kernel
source, you never know what u might end up with)

then goto /usr/src/linux

make config
this is the part where you will be prompted for what kernel options you
want. its *relatively* straight foreward, just remember to say yes to the
math emulation if u dont have a math co-processor (ok to say yes if you
have one anyway, the kernel will use the real one if its there, even if
emulation support is in the kernel.)
also say yes to "System V IPC" cuz some programs need it (ie linux
doom!)

if you make a typo here and know it, you can always just "make config" again.

say yes to SCSI support, (you'll have to know what # your adaptec card is
cuz it will prompt you for it), yes to sound support, (not sure bout nec
cdrom support tho)

make dep (makes the include dependancies, takes 10-15 minutes on my box)

make zImage (compiles your kernel, takes 1.45 hours on my 386 8meg ram
system)

now, if you're using lilo, you should "make zlilo" instead of "make zImage"

if you're using a boot disk, find the zImage file (thats your kernel),
its in /usr/src/arch/i386/boot/zImage on recent kernels, and put your soon
to be boot floppy in drive a: and do a

cp zImage /dev/fd0

if all is confusing you, get the Kernel-HOW-TO, it should be in the
pub/linux/docs/HOW-TO directory of sunsite or a sunsite mirror

1. Yggdrasil Fall 1994 Plug-and-Play Linux

I recently purchased the Fall 1994 version of Yggdrasil's Plug-and-Play
Linux. Enclosed was also the August edition of LINUX JOURNAL. Reading
through it, I found an article concerning the Summer release of PnP. In
it, publisher Phil Hughes commented that "[Yggdrasil] have ignored the
Linux file system standard." I have a number of questions about his
statement. First, what exactly are the differences between the two file
systems? Will it be a problem if (when) I decide to download or purchase
new Linux programs? Has Yggdrasil resolved these differences in the Fall
PnP? I want to remain as close to tht *standards* of the Linux development
community, so the answers to these questions are somewhat important.

to this group is more than adequate. I only have 3 weeks to decide if I
should keep PnP or send it back, so time is of the essence. Thanx!
