ATI Mach 64 Pro Turbo w 2 MB Ram

Post by Santosh Krishnan x281 » Sun, 05 Jan 1997 04:00:00

Hi,
I have an ATI Mach 64 Pro turbo with 2 MB RAM in my Linux machine.
Howeverr, when I run X, it runs at 256 colours.  I checked out the
XF86Config file, and it seems to have entries that would let the X server
run at higher colours, but it doesn't.  I tries starting the server with
the -bpp option, but it gave me some error message.

I'd like to know if X can run at 16 Million colours at 800x600 resolution
and with 64K colours at 1024x786 resolution.

Sincerely
Santosh Krishnan

My ATI Mach64 Graphics Expression works fine for me.  Have you
tried it like this:

startx -- -bpp 16

startx -bpp16 used to work for me, but now that I am using XFree86 3.2
it doesn't.

Re-run the configuration script and at one point you can select the
priority of resolutions and colors. I think you may have missed this
screen.

With XFree86 3.2, you have to put a 'DefaultColorDepth' value in your
XF86Config file, then it should start up in the right colour depth
each time. It mentions this somewhere in the documentation, and on the
XFree86 website.

1. Diamond Stealth 64 Video VRAM or ATI Graphics Pro Turbo (Mach 64)?

I'm looking into getting a Micron P120PCI Millennia Plus system for
running Linux and XFree86. The Micron upgrade choices for video cards
are:

 - Diamond Stealth 64 Video VRAM    - 2MB or 4MB
 - ATI Graphics Pro Turbo (Mach 64) - 2MB or 4MB

Which is better supported in XFree86?

Is there any significant speed difference between these two cards for
XFree86?

I've heard that some cards run faster w/4MB than 2MB due to memory
interleaving or double wide bus access.  Do either of these two cards
have this property or is the only difference for these cards the
number of colors supported at higher resolutions?

Thanks,
Doug
