Problems with making a PPP connection

Problems with making a PPP connection

Post by Matt Harrel » Thu, 11 Dec 1997 04:00:00

Hello,

I'm having a heck of a time trying to get a PPP connection to work with
my new ISP.  I've successfully configured it for my two previous ISP's,
but this one's really fighting me.  If there happens to be anyone
reading this in Michigan with the same ISP, it happens to be "Voyager".
I think I've figured out that they are using PAP authentication
(although their tech support person was not able to tell me that for
sure, and refused to help me because I am not using either Windows or a
Mac).  However, with everything I try in my "options", and
"ppp-on-dialer" (chat script) files, it always seems to come back with
the message:

LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests

after sitting for a while seemingly waiting for something on the server
side.

As my .signature file below shows, I'm running Red Hat 4.2 on a "PC".
I've been fighting with this for many hours straight now, and I would
greatly appreciate any help anyone could give me.  Thanks.

I had the same PAP problem with my ISP. Turns out that somebody changed the PAP
parameters because of a hacker,  but nobody could tell me what to do.  I ended up
changing ISPs.

Do you connect to your newsgroups through your ISP's news server?  If so, do they
have their own newsgroup?  Mine did, and that's where I found out what my chat
script should look like.

I have been using ww-interlink.net for linux ppp service and have been
mostly very happy. I ill note that I always get a message about timeout
sending config requests even whin I've been successful. Note that
nothing magic happens when you are well connected. You must initiate a
telnet or some other action.

1. Problem making PPP connection since 2 weeks!

Help!
I'm trying to use PPP with PAP enabled by calling pppd as root.
After processing the according chat-script, which connects me to
my ISP, the pppd goes into PPP. The problem is that the connection
terminates for no obvious reason. The termination is requested
from my machine though, which looks to me as if I have some confi-
guration problem somewhere. I guess there must be some other error-
logfile which contains some more details.
I have read all the HOWTO's and FAQ's but I haven't found any similar
problem. I followed one suggestion calling ifconfig to see the ppp0
device, but no devices except the eth0 and the loopback are shown,
so the connection has never really been made!!

The entries in my syslog look like this:
