PCI Modem and RH 6.0

Post by Samuel M Masiell » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

Hello All!

I am still relatively new to the Linux world (although I LOVE it) so please
excuse my probable ignorance on this one :)

Here is my situation:  I am running Windoze 98 and RH Linux 6.0 (kernel
2.2.5, fresh install off of the CD) on two separate hard drives.  I have a
PCI modem on COM3, and I have had a heck of a time getting RH to recognize
it to dial out.  I used to have a 3Com 56k modem in, but that was an ISA
modem.
Anyway, I have /dev/modem set to ttyS2, but when I try to dial out, the
modem never picks up the phone.  In fact, I never even hear the click of
when it initializes.  I have moved the modem to COM2 (and set /dev/modem to
ttyS1) with no help.

In reading the modem HOWTO (I wanted to do some research first :) ), I read
that PCI modems are generally a pain to get to work in Linux.
Unfortunately, the HOWTO didn't really give much in the way of suggestion or
obvious things to take a look at or try.

So, my question boils down to, is there anything anyone can suggest that
might be one of the more obvious things to look at or try that I have not
done already?  I realize all modems are different so I certainly cannot ask
"Please help me fix this" as that is not reasonable, but any suggestion
anyone can offer on obvious things to look at or try (perhaps from previous
experience) would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Thank you very much in advance!  Sorry for being a little long winded too :)

Is your PCI modem a "WinModem", that's one that requires a driver program
running in Windows to control its operation.  Most of the new, low cost
modems are WinModems.  If so, no official support yet although some are
working to change that. --

No, it is not a Winmodem.  I tried to cover all of my bases in my post, but
I missed that one.  Sorry for missing that point (It is an important one).

How do you know it is not a Winmodem? As Michael Eve said, most of PCI
modems are Winmodems (and there is no marking it is so). If you are not
sure, try http://www.os2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html. And the port
number for a PCI device is meaningless and all up to the driver.

Cheers.

If is not a winmodem but it is PCI this trick works for me.

cat /proc/pci

Look for a:
 Bus 0, device 15, function 0:
Serial controller: Unknown vendor Known device
          vendor id=12b9. Device id=1008
          Medium devsel.  IRQ 10
          I/O at 0x1890 [0x1890]

entry in the output of /proc/pci
Record the IRQ and I/O address

If you modem is on COM3 use the following:
setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 10 port 0x1890 autoconfig
(Replace the IRQ and I/O with your values)

1. AOpen FM56-PM PCI Modem installed on RH 6.0?

Hi,

I have a problem while install my internal modem on RedHat 6.0. The modem
is a AOpen FM56-PM 56K Speakerphone PCI modem, which runs well under Win98.

But after I configed it in XWindow's system config, it seemed do nothing!

What should I exactly do to make it work?

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,
Gavin
