Red Hat 5.1 can't create boot disk

Red Hat 5.1 can't create boot disk

Post by Harr » Fri, 27 Nov 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

Can anyone help me with this one ... I've installed Red Hat 5.1 but
it refuses to create a boot disk at the end of the installation. It
asks me to put a blank floppy in the drive, which I do, the drive
access light goes on, and then I get an error message. I'm sure it's
not the floppy that's at fault (unless you need one that's
unformatted, as the one I'm using is formatted using Win98), as the
install is initiated from the floppy drive. Does anyone have any
ideas?

Red Hat 5.1 can't create boot disk

Run setup without making a boot floppy.  Then while running linux, log
in and use a command called 'mkbootdisk'.  This way you will be able to
see what errors are reported from the command.  Also, it should not
matter what disk you use as the disk creation process reformats it
anyway.  You may want to make sure that the write protect tab is not on.

1. Red Hat setup 4.1 won't create a boot disk

Hi,
I just installed Red Hat Linux 4.1. Everything went fine, but the last
step: creating a boot disk wouldn't do a thing, nor on the harddisk,
nor on a floppy. I tried everything from the howto's but nothing works.
I have an Adaptec SCSI disk of 3Gb and linux is on the last partition
of 300Mb. Could anyone please help me?
Oh, yes, when I boot with a Slackware installation disk and I choose
to boot from my harddisk, it says "Child # died with error code 0xff00",
where # is a number counting from 0 till ???
And when I boot with a Red Hat installation disk, my SCSI card doesn't
seem to be recognized.

Another remark: I went to the RedHat site, and tried to get support, but
the thing asked for a serial number and I got my CD from
"Computer World", a magazine, and there is no serial number on it.
