Linux installation - Reboots without warning

Post by M » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

I've made several attempts at installing the Linux OS (5 different
distributions) and am coming across the same problem... My system will begin
the installation program and then mysteriously power down and reboot. I was
able to get as far as the KDE desktop under the Winlinux distribution but
within seconds experienced the powerdown and reboot. I have been running
Windows98 without trouble. Any ideas as to the cause of this problem? I have
disabled any powerdown features on the BIOS level and slowed down the boot
speed. Is there something else that I should modify in the BIOS? The
following is a list of technical specs provided by a linux diagnostic
program. Is it a hardware issue?

I'm very keen at having an alternative to the Windows OS and would
appreciate any help...

Thanks in advance for your feedback,
M.

Linux installation - Reboots without warning

Post by tsalm.. » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

1 idea and a note:
we have one computer at work that randomly reboots at work, but only
once every few hours. (we have reigated it to the corner for now)

the only thing that i can say for certain is that if your CPU fan is
not pluged in the computer will run for about 2 minutes (max).
To check: open the case and watch for it to spin up on power

1. elxl driver installation without reboot

As part of my current job I inherited responsibility for running some
Intel solaris systems on Compaq 1600R hardware. The boxes themselves
have had a second NIC added but never configured. These cards use the
elxl driver.

Now the problem. I've just rebooted the two machines to get them to
register the cards, not a task I can really do again as they run very
high traffic web sites and it tends to annoy rather a lot of people.

One of the boxes has detected the card quite happily, the other didn't.
The reason, I discovered, being a lack of driver in /kernel/drv.

So is there anyway of configuring this card without a reboot, and if not
do I just have to copy the drivers into /kernel/drv or will I need to
add the driver to a list somewhere ?

Thanks
