Slackware '96 stock bootdisks lock at "LI"...

Post by Chris Lem » Tue, 24 Sep 1996 04:00:00

Hi there...I just got the Slackware '96 4-CD set, and I ran into some
problems today when I was installing...since I only have two IDE hard
drives and one IDE CD-ROM (on the secondary bus, but it shouldn't
matter, since the Slackware 3.0 kernel always found it fine), I used
the bare.i image...when I tried to boot the disk, it hung up at the
"LI" part of "LILO", locking the system. Trying other bootdisks did
the same thing...

Finally, I solved the problem by using one of the bootdisks from the
Slackware 3.0 set from last year, along with the Slackware '96
rootdisk color.gz, got the system installed, and then compiled the
kernel I needed from the 2.0.0 source, making a new bootdisk.
Everything now works, and soon I get to start reinstalling the few
utils I had on the old system. :)

Problem is, I don't wanna have to rely upon the 3.0 bootdisks to make
the '96 set install, should I ever have to start from scratch
again...does anyone know why the stock bootdisks would lock up at
"LI", and what I might be able to do to make 'em work? Thanks in
advance for the help...

I had a  similar problem when I was using a motherboard that did not
support lba modes and then upgraded to one that did>  What I suggest
is to boot off of the slackware 3.0 disks and look at you partition
tables from fdisk if your partitions do not end on physical boundaries
you may need to reformat and reinstall

1. Thoughts on Slackware "96"?

Hello:

I have a new Pentium 150 PCI w/ 32Mb and 1.8Gb drive.  It was purchased as
an upgrade to our current Internet server (an upgraded IBM PS/Valuepoint
486DX4 100 w/ 16Mb and 580Mb drive, running Slackware 3.0 kernel 1.3.20).
The current set up has been running *flawlessly* with 1.3.20, even though
that's not really considered to be a stable kernel.

There have been a lot of developments in Linux and the GNU world since I
brought up the server in October, so I'd like to upgrade the software as
well.  The first thing I tried out was Red Hat 3.0.3.  I gave it the old
college try, but let me just say that "it wasn't for me".

Therefore I think I will stick with Slackware.  The question is, should I
stick with Slackware 3.0 and just upgrade the kernel and applications, or
is Slackware "96" (3.1?) worth purchasing.  What kind of bugs and security
issues have been uncovered wrt the new release?

Also...I have dealt with a myriad of security issues on my existing system
(subscribing to the alert list) but I didn't have the foresight to archive
the alerts.  So I am worried about leaving holes when I get the new system
set up.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
