best way to re-install

Post by Chris Hernande » Fri, 03 Jul 1998 04:00:00

Due to some unknown error on my part, I can no longer use non-root accounts.
The permission and paths are not set properly. I have been unable to find a
solution so I will try and re-install Linux.

Now, what is the best way to re-install? Should I delete all the
directories? I have RedHat 5.0 and was using KDE beta4. What are the
important configuration files I should save? Particularly what should I save
from /etc directory?

If anyone replies pls. cc a copy to my e-mail address.

1. Best route from 1.1.8 to 1.1.18+ : patch/re-install?

I've been running Linux 1.1.8 for a few weeks and now feel it's
probably time to get more up to date. I've seen suggestions that the
patching process (or the kernel itself) is a bit dodgy around 1.1.12 and
that it's better to reinstall a later kernel and start from there. Is this

BTW I only say 1.1.18 because it seems to be the latest stable kernel - I
may be wrong. Anyway, so far I've only compiled the kernel once (for
cd-rom support and minor configuration), and as yet have no experience of
patching (nor am I reluctant to do so -- gotta learn somehow). So...
what's the best approach? Thanks in advance.
