ATI 3D Pro Turbo / Rage II + Xfree86 ???

Post by Dennis Gorr » Thu, 28 Nov 1996 04:00:00

I want to use Linux and Xfree86 with this video card:
ATI 3D Pro Turbo
Rage II chipset
4M SGRAM

Does anyone know if the Xfree86 Mach 64 accelerated drivers will work with
this?

Does anyone know if it will work with
ATI 3D Expression PC2TV? (same rage II chipset)
ATI 3D Expression (rage I chipset)
ATI Expression 2M dram

Thanks in advance

..Dennis

Err.. any reason why not?  ATI claims the Rage II to be "fully register compatible with the Mach
64".  Now admittedly, they don't say _which_ Mach 64, but I imagine it means one of the existing
versions, which means it should work with XFree86.  I know that I had to get the (then) beta
version (3.1.2D) when I upgraded to a new Mach 64 card in March due to slight differences.  Is
this what you are referring to, or are you just guessing?

There's no need to guess.  The facts speak for themselves.  There are
enough differences between the 3D Rage and the 3D Rage II to cause various
display problems.  Even memory size detection is different.  "Fully
register compatible" is a matter of opinion, i.e. not mine.  We'll have to
see what kind of information Kevin Martin and I can get out of ATI.

I have seen many people asking for help with this video card and
none of the answers I have seen worked for me.  I just recently upgraded
to a Pentium Pro 180 and an ATI 3D Pro Turbo PC2TV w/8MB SGRAM.  Some more
pertinent details:
        CPU:  Intel Pentium Pro 180
        MB:  Intel Venus 440FX
Video:  ATI 3D Pro Turbo PC2TV w/8MB SGRAM
Kernel:  Linux 2.0.30 i486 (APM features are enabled; does that
                make a difference?)
        XF86:  3.3.1
        GCC:  2.7.2.3
        LibC:  5.4.38
Monitor:  KFC (generic; no KF Chicken jokes please) 15"
I have included the output from startx (error3.txt) and my config file
(XF86Config).  When I start X windows (with 'startx') all I get is a blank
screen.  I know the monitor is still getting a signal because it doesn't
power itself down.  The screen is just black.  If you need any more
details, do not hesitate to ask.  I need help, PLEASE!!!
