uninstalling LiLo

Post by Eric Le Bomin 56 » Fri, 13 Dec 1996 04:00:00

hi all,

I would like to use loadlin, but LiLo is already installed and I think
that it is why loadlin doesn't work. When I try to launch loadlin,
it stops immediatly because of a problem of memory probably already
occupied by LiLo (which boot to DOS).

Does anybody knows how to fix this problem, or how to uninstall LiLo ?

Thank you very much for your help.

There is no reason why DOS started by LILO shoulf not be able to run loadlin.

I do wish people would not talk about "unistalling LILO".  lilo has a
option "-u" to put back whatever was in the boot sector what ever was there
before.  If you've thrown away the backup then the question is not how
to unistall lilo but how to install something else.  This is
fundamentally *not* a question about LILO but about whatever it is you
want to intall.  If what you want to install is a DOS MBR then the
answer given in the Linux FAQ may help.

in MS-DOS : fdisk /MBR

at the dos prompt type: FDISK /MBR  . I have done this myself with
success. It removes lilo form the mbr.

It works when I use the Slackware Linux. But, when I try to use Red Hat V4.0,
"fdisk /mbr" didn't work at all.  Any advise ?

There is no "Slackware Linux" or "Red Hat Linux". All of them use the same
Linux kernel and will install the same UNIX system (well, maybe with some
different flavours).

If you have a problem with LILO, then, well, it's a problem with LILO, not
with the non-existing Slackware Linux or RedHat Linux.

And the LILO docs would have told you, that the MSDOS fdisk /MBR will just
as the option said remove (i.e. overwrite) the MASTER BOOT RECORD.
If you've installed LILO in the boot sector of the partition, it's not very
helpful to overwrite the master boot record. In that case just mark a
different partition as active.

1. How to Uninstall LILO -o How to boot DOS once LILO is installed?

I just installed SLS .99p9 on my system and I went ahead and installed
LILO.

1.      How do you uninstall it if you no longer want it?

2.      ...or how do I boot my DOS partition once it is installed?
