NEWBIE cant open diplay?

NEWBIE cant open diplay?

Hi all,
I chickened out and installed minilinux. I like it except when I type
xterm, startx (i would like to use x windows) etc I get an error that
says 'cant open display'. I think there is a problem with my video card.
But the games work and xtree worked. There are some colors here and
there. I dont think any of my hardware is configured right. I would RTFM
but so far I cant find one. I think I have a problem with pkzip on my NT
box and cant
unzipTFM after I found some docs at the linux doc project! Anyway, I
will buy a book but I would like to get it running enough to be usable.
Also my keyboard is set for another country.

serial mouse on com1
modem on com 2
isdn TA on com3
keyboard USA
video card trident chipset (i think)
printer and zip drive on lpt1

Any help is appreciated

And when I type startx (i would like to use x windows)it seems to say
that my trident chipset is unrecognised. Could some one tell me where to
find video drivers for this problem?

        I think you need to "export DISPLAY=:0" from the command line, if that
works, add "export DISPLAY=:0" in your /etc/profile so it's read at boot
up.

1. Cant open /etc/ptmp, cant update password

Ordinary users cannot change their passwords on the our Slackware 2.0.1
system. All of the packages in the a and n series were installed,
including, if i remember, the agetty package.

We lost the root password, and had to use the rescue disk to get in,
but these errors leave me bewildered. Should we reinstall ?

vimy:~$ passwd
Enter old password:
Enter new password:
Re-type new password:
Can't open /etc/ptmp, can't update password
