Linux/LILO on 2GB SCSI drive w/ 1542CF???

Post by Fred Pac » Wed, 11 Jan 1995 03:24:21

Are there any know problems installing and running Linux (we're
using Yggdrasil Fall 94 RevD) on a 2GB SCSI drive with an Adaptec
1542CF controller.  I've read the barrage of threads concerning
LILO with large IDE drives and I'm wondering if these same problems
will manifest on a 2GB SCSI drive.  Are there any HOW-TO's discussing
this issue (I haven't found any)?

Any help, comments, ideas, etc., would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I've been running a 2GB Seagate SCSI drive on my Linux 1.0 machine for several
months with no problems. I'm using a Buslogic BT-445s in Adaptec emulation
mode. fdisk did complain when I set up the partitions, but I just ignored the
messages and everything has worked fine since then.

Just my experience, of course, other people may have other stories.

Wizvax is running a DEC dsp3210 (2.1GB) on an adaptec 1542CF with no
problems.  Our root/boot drive is an IDE.  The only limitation I know of
is that your boot partition must be within the BIOS limits for disk
(usually 1024 cylinders, 63sec/trk, 16 heads).

Is this still true on system with LBA that support drives with >1024 cyls
under dos with no device drivers?  My BIOS lets me enter drives as 1048x16x63
and 1654x16x63.  My Dos boot drive is a wd2540 setup as 1048 cyls and fdisk'd
into one big partition.  I just installed a wd2850, and have dos on the first
400mb, and would like to put linux on the second 400mb.  I've read about
tricks where the kernel is on a dos fs, but I wonder if that will be necessary.

I've had Slakware up and running on a P90, 1542CF, IBM 2gb SCSI
configuration for the last several weeks.  I created sommething like
a 300mb root partition, and then a 16mb swap before installing.
Other than operator error in getting LILO configured, I had no problems
with it.  The large disk problems with IDE are usually related to BIOS
limitaions, which don't come into play for SCSI controllers.

1. LILO + windows on a SCSI drive + linux on an IDE drive

Hi,
   A friend of mine just installed Caldera OpenLinux 2.3 on his system.
It's working fine, however now his Windows drive won't boot.
The setup is as follows: a Supermicro motherboard with built in IDE and
SCSI controllers, the later of which is an Adaptec AIC 7880 UltraW with
Bios version 1.24.  He's got an 8.1 gig Seagate drive at ID0 on the scsi
controller, containing Windows 95.  (There's also a CD ROM on ID4, if
that's signifigant.)  Then he's got Linux on a regular IDE drive, which
the BIOS has been flagged to boot.

Windows boots fine if he tells the BIOS to boot the SCSI drive, and
Linux works fine when booting from the IDE, but it's rather a big pain
to have to go into the BIOS every time.  When he selects the windows
drive from the LILO prompt, it blanks the screen and locks the system
(eg, numlock won't toggle on and off).

His lilo.conf is as follows:

#
# general section
#
boot = /dev/hda1
install = /boot/boot.b
message = /boot/message
prompt

# wait 20 seconds (200 10ths) for user to select the entry to load
timeout = 200

#
# default entry
#

image = /boot/vmlinuz-pc97-2.2.10-modular
        label = linux
        root = /dev/hda1
        read-only
        append = "debug=2"

#
# additional entries
#

other = /dev/sda1
        label = dos
        table = /dev/sda

Any thoughts much appreciated.  I've used LILO plenty before, but never
with any SCSI drives, so I don't know what to do next.

Thanks!
