xf86OpenConsole:cannot open dev/console ? HELP

Post by robert walk » Sat, 09 Mar 1996 04:00:00

Okay, I think I am going crazy, it get this error when trying to start X.
and X and fvwm, mwm were all working ok for a month or so, then when I went to
start it today, it hangs with this message

xf86OpenConsole:cannot open /dev/console

but this error occurs when I run startx.

this is with Slackware 3.0, and a Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM (trio 64)

now /dev/console is there, and I even added /dev to my path, although this
was never an issue before, and I ran the xf86config file again,
generating a new XF86Config file.

I think it may be a kernel. But why?, why does it suddenly yack
after weeks of being okay. (its kernel 1.3.20)?

Please send any suggestions for a fix, thanks all

Haha...you too!  At least I know I'm not crazy.  I get the
errors with games trying to use the VGA card too.  I wished I
knew why but looks like will have to wait for another person to shed
some light no the matter...sorry for both you and me.  I'm posting this
from windows95 ironic isn't it?

Robert answered me and his answer worked fine!
What you do is log in as root, then

rm /dev/console

and then

mknod -m 622 /dev/console c 4 0

and everything now works. Why? don't know, but this works.
