What is it you actually want to test, the network cards that I use have
diag software which work under dos and do a full test of the card, I
don't know if this is supported under LINUX but I wood imagine that if
you ping the localhost this would give some indication if the card was
actually running

Well, you could start up with a DOS disk and then use whatever
diagnostic tools came with the card, for DOS (most of them come
with something like that - it's a quick-n-dirty way to get I/O and
IRQ from PnP devices, or those that don't use jumpers). Or, once
you have all the addresses assigned to it, you could ping the
address assigned to that card. There's also those little blinky
lights on the cards themselves :)

What kind of network card is it???? can you download the dos drivers? did you
get it new or used?  Did it come with a disk? terminators? cables? is it BNC,RJ-
45, or the wide 15-pin ethernet? is it ethernet?  I need info here...

The reason I ask, the dos drivers that come on the disk (sometimes downloadable)
contains a diagnostice program(usually)
