XFree86 and Diamond Stealth 3D 2000

Post by Benjamin Montgomer » Mon, 27 Jan 1997 04:00:00

I am trying to get my Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 card to work with X, but I am
running into some problems. I can't get it to recognize my card. I get an
error saying "Unknown S3 chipset : 0x0301e1".

I was hoping that if someone has gotten this card to work, that they might
be able to send me a copy of their XF86Config file. Or if not, where is a
good place to get some more info?

Thanks,
Ben

BTW: If you could reply by email, I would really appreciate it.

I have a problem to work with X.
After X loaded, I can barely move the mouse.
Eventually I succeeded to load a shell window, but the
size of the window and the fonts are huge!, probably 3 times then
the size I accpected to see.

I'm using a simple Microsoft mouse and I declared it
in XF86Config as "Microsoft" (I also tried "MouseMan"), so I
beleive that my problems are related to my video card,
Diamond Stealth64 Video 2001.

My X is linked to XF86_SVGA.

Did I missed something ?  (I am a Linux novice)

Any help will be appreciated

Thanx!

Not to worry, your hardware is fine.  I have one of those, and I like it
very much.  Only problem is that it's limited to 2 MB of video RAM. :(

You sure did!  Use the S3 server, not the SVGA server!!!

I am sending a copy of my XF86Config file separately by email; that
should help a bit.

For this card IIRC you need to use the S3V (Virge) xserver. (Although for
the Diamond Stealth Video VRAM 32xx you use the normal S3 server).

It works, but you'll need a sever that supports it, like XFree 3.2

1. Diamond Stealth 3d 2000 Pro, and the Diamond Stealth 3d 3000, in Xfree86

If your having problems with the Diamond Stealth 3d 2000 Pro, and the
Diamond Stealth 3d 3000, in Xfree86, please read.

It's the "pro" part of you Stealth 3d 2000 that is giving you the
problem. It's designed for video in addition to regular display. This is
also a problem with many of the Stealth 3d 3000 cards(but not all). The
fix is to cut it back to 16bpp. You see, at 24bpp and 32bpp, the Stealth
3000 needs a special driver that handles the mpeg/avi video acceleration
features of these cards. But not at 16bpp.

Sometimes you can get away with running the Diamond Stealth 3d 2000 pro,
and the Diamond Stealth 3d 3000 at 24bpp and 32bpp. But chances are
you'll get the following problems:

XF_s3V server: lockups when user exits window manager, screen turns neon
lime green or red(other colors also reported, but these two are the most
common). However, this server works fine at 16bpp.

XF_SVGA server: works great, but acceleration at 24bpp or 32 bpp is not
complete!!!!! Boot up Netscape and you will see what I mean. The buttons
on Navigator will be in black&white.

These problems do not effect the Stealth 3d 2000 "classic", just the
Stealth 3d 2000 Pro and the Stealth 3d 3000 series cards.
