load arena = segmentation fault

load arena = segmentation fault

Post by r.. » Wed, 08 Oct 1997 04:00:00

I am installing debian Linux on a Toshiba laptop
model T1910CS, no Super VGA, using VGA16 xserver.
and a pcmcia card modem. (modem working)

I enter "arena -debug" in the xterm window and
this is what I get.

WWWLibInit.. INITIALIZING LIBRARY OF COMMON CODE
TimeZone.... GMT + (-4) hours (including DST)
Tmp Root.... Root set to '/tmp/'
Alert Add... HTAlertCallback 0x806d4b0
Cache Root.. Root set to '/tmp/'
Reading 50 x 35 GIF image
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Two possibilities occur to me.

1. I was not able to disable shadow bios prior
to installation. The Toshiba Setup program provides
no way, and The Toshiba Manual says it can't be disabled.

2. I am getting my packages one by one using ftp, and
have only installed the packages identified as
dependencies or otherwise mentioned in the description
of a package, hence I may have left something out.
I don't have enough disc space to include the entire
X11 distribution. I have xbase, xfnt75, xfntbase,
xlib6, xsrvga16, zlib1, libjpg6a, libpng1, and arena.

My goal is to get a graphical browser to work. I have
tried arena, mosaic, and one of the others in
not-free, but can't get any of them to load. For the
time being I'm confining my efforts to arena, since
there is ample evidence on the web that other's have
been able to load it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Why did you post this twice?

Anyway, the 'arena' that was included with my Slackware 3.1 segfaulted
on many URL's even with the full standard setup, so I removed it.

X-Mosaic is rather primative by today's standard and last I looked
apparently is no longer being developed.  Netscape 3.01 java does not
work due to old libs used to compile it.  The basic Netscape Navigator
4.03 (browser only without even email) is over 7 meg compressed (not
sure what it expands to).  Many graphics may not even be viewable at
16 color anyway.  There is always 'lynx' (which got into pages that
crashed X-Mosaic).
