OK, I decided to get started on Linux, but I ran into a little problem
right away. I have a 3.1 GB hard drive with 6136 cylinders. It seems Linux
is having a fit about it. I have 3 partitions on the drive, but Linux only
sees 2 very messed up partitions as follows...
Disk /dev/hda: 16 heads, 63 sectors, 6136 cylinders
Units= cylinders of 1008 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Begin Start End Blocks ID System
/dev/hda1 * 1 1 3288 1657120+ 55 Unknown
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary:
phys=(410, 127, 63) should be (410, 15, 63)
/dev/hda2 2460 3289 6128 1431360 55 Unknown
Partition 2 does not end on cylinder boundary:
phys=(765, 127, 63) should be (765, 15, 63)
I have Windows 95 installed and running on the first partition. The second
and third are empty except for the hidden "trashcan" file. I was going to
put linux on the second partition and not have a swap file (I have 64 megs
of EDO and 2 slots for expansion left). Does anyone know whats wrong?
Also...I remember having problems last time I installed linux and I lost
my DOS partition info. Can I install linux, format a partition for linux
native, and not have it mess up my Win95 partition? I havent invested in a
Does anyone also know what kernel I should use for an 8x Ceative Labs
CD-ROM attached as a slave to my hard drive? In windows, the driver lists
as Goldstar GCD-R580B. Its set to slave on the primary IDE controller.
Im using Slackware 3.0 which I got from a package called Linux
Unleashed. Im trying to eventually get a MUD running locally on it so I
can help work on the code.
