I am running RH 7.1, with the kernel upgraded to 2.4.5-10 (the problem
occurred under a 2.4.2 kernel too) on a iwill KA-266 with the 1.13Ghz
Athlon, .5G RAM... the KA-266 has the C-Media(R) CMI-87383D Sound Chip.
My desktop is Gnome 1.4, standard with RH 7.1. The driver (cmpci.o)
appears to be installed and seems to load fine.
When I attempt to do something that should make a sound through the
'sound card,' I get this in /var/log/messages:
Jul 18 00:20:24 localhost kernel: cm: version $Revision: 5.64 $ time
14:52:00 Jun 27 2001
Jul 18 00:20:24 localhost kernel: cm: found CM8738 adapter at io 0xe000
irq 5
Jul 18 00:20:24 localhost kernel: chip version = 037
Jul 18 00:20:24 localhost kernel: cm: Enable SPDIF loop
Jul 18 00:20:24 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
sound-service-0-3
and no sound comes out. If I do a simple
cat jazz.au>/dev/audio
I get the above messages in /var/log/messages, a wait at the command
prompt (it seems to think it's playing the .au), and no error message in
my shell.
I can't seem to find the missing module, not by modprobe or even find.
It's not in the RPMs on my redhat install cdroms. I ran sndconfig, and
the "Can't locate module sound-service-0-3" message goes away until I
reboot, but I still don't hear anything.
I have three holes on the backof my machine to plug my speakers into,
and I've tried all three. I'm not sure what else to try. Does anyone
here have any ideas?
