Post by Rick Nie » Sat, 01 Jul 1995 04:00:00

Hi All,

Please forgive the long cross-post list, but I NEED answers to this
A.S.A.P.  I have a Diamond Stealth 32 VLB graphics card with 2megs VRAM.
I have been told that it is impossible to use this card with linux.  IS
THIS TRUE??????  I have been looking at a linux upgrade and did not want
to buy any new hardware for it.  I LIKE THIS VIDEO CARD!  are there
drivers I can get for it that will allow me to fully use it under linux?
Please respond A.S.A.P.!!!!  Also, if anyone knows the address of
Diamond's web page, I need it also.  THanx...

Rick:
I too asked the same question about my Diamond Stealth 24.  I was
happily told that Linux/X-Windows will work with Diamond's card if you get
X86Free ( or
XFree86 ) 3.1.1.  The only bad thing is that the card only works in
640x800 mode -- or something in that range.

YES, it is very sad story.
Diamond with 4 MB VRAM can run 1600x1280
but 3.11 support only up to 1024x768
Which mean 3 more MB become useless.

Anyone want to write this driver to support 1600x1280 :):)
THANKS,
zxc

Well, I don't this is true that 3 MB of VRAM is useless:

Just some clarifications.

This, of course, depends on the server's capability.

But, back to the original question. Yes, you can use the Stealth 32
with XFree (SVGA or W32) servers. Get the dclkprog.tgz for some help in
setting the dot clock, either from my sig or sunsite.unc.edu.

1. PCI, Diamond Stealth vlb 32, and Linux

I am considering purchasing a 486-66 pci computer with a diamond stealth
viper pci video card vlb 32.  I have heard warnings that I could end up
having trouble with both of these and running linux.  I have even heard
I should be careful about which drive controler card I use.  I was
wondering if anybody could offer me some warnings and recommendations
pertaining to what I would need to run Linux.  Thanx a lot!
