Uninstall LILO?

Post by BradMc » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

Hi, I have just installed RH 5.2 for the 4th time, my pacience is wearing
rather thin with our friend Linux (main thing that gets me is a constant
barrier where I cannot connect to some server or other when I want SVGA at a
usable resolution), this time I tried workstation install instead of custom
and ended up with LILO burying itself on my HD, can someone tell me how to
remove it and get things back to the way they were plz?.

Thanks,

Brad.

I'd really love to get with Linux, but keep getting a server type error
message and I can kiss my X windows goodbye and the rest of the show.

You need to write a fresh master boot record.  The easiest way to do
this (from DOS/Win/etc.) is to use the little-known /mbr paramater in
fdisk, as in
        fdisk/mbr
Under OpenDos, you have a menu option in fdisk to write the master
boor record.  I don't know about OS/2.

IIRC, the command is...
  lilo -u
assuming, of course, that you *haven't* wiped the boot sector
backup file that lilo created when you first installed it.

If you *have* lost that boot sector file, then you'll probably
have to boot into MSDOS, and fdisk /mbr  to recreate the DOS
boot sector.

I was on my way towards fdisk, and you saved the day. Thanks for the advice
Lew.

If anyone can help with the server connect error message it goes as follows:

_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect : Can't connect : errno=111
giving up.
xinit : connection refused (errno 111) : unable to connect to Xserver
xinit : No such process (errno 3) : server error.

I get this literally every time. so my exposure to Linux is always limited
to a day maximum.

Thanks
Brad

Actually fdisk /mbr for dos
or fdisk /newmbr for OS/2
Drdos has an interesting way to do it, check the info.

Um, did you setup your Xserver or not? For those of us just now getting
into the thread, care to explain what context this all is in? I'm guessing
you're trying to run startx and it gives up?

Uninstall LILO?

Try booting using the svga server, which has so far worked with ever
card I have tried it on both new and old. The res is not that great in
default mode, but it starts X11. Use XF86Config or XF86Setup (Setup is
GUI) to set the server and to tune it to look reasonable. BTW, if you
use an unusual card (ie, Voodoo), you need a special accelerated svga
server to do graphics reasonably. They can be found at on the net, so
look about.

That's my 2 cents.

Sajid.
