Ram disk for /var/adm/messages & syslog

Ram disk for /var/adm/messages & syslog

Post by Christophe Zwecke » Tue, 03 Dec 1996 04:00:00

Hi,

I want to make a ramdisk for theese two files (and maybe others), so
when my scsi hd's are down, the tail on messages and syslog won't wake
em up.

Has anybody created a dynamically growing one ? I haven't been able to
archive that. How did you do it ?

Other: what except at & cron would make the hd wake up, so I can put it
on the ramdisk ?

Please reply plenty, I ve been tring to do this for couple month
already.

thx alot

But why, the heck would you want to do so?? AFAIK spinning up and down
again is the best way to quickly destroy drives.
Want to save power? I recently checked my system as to find measures
to save power and found the following:
computer (486-80, 24Meg, 2 EIDE Disks, Soundcard, SCSI Controller,
2Meg VGA) uses 30 Watts, when both drives are spinning. Downspinning
the Drives (running DOS for this test) saves around 6Watts.
My Monitor (CTX1785) consumes 30Watts in stand-by, 84 Watts in text
mode and -- depending on hsync frequency -- 120 to 150 Watts in
graphics mode. My Modem eats 14Watts, and when i leave the perculator
on to have hot coffe ready, that takes another 45 Watts.

So I decided to buy a thermosflask for the coffee and leave the drives
spinning.

By the way: I used a $500 power-meter that I had borrowed from my
power supplier's consumer support center.

Mahlzeit,
