#9 GXE 64 Pro & X - How I Did It

Post by Tony L.Winingha » Fri, 27 Jan 1995 12:56:47

I know, cross-posting is discouraged, but alot of folks are having the same
difficulties I did.  These newsgroups were my saving grace trying to
get this to work.  Thanks to all who posted the pieces I needed :)

I currently have the #9 GXE 64 Pro (2MB VRAM) running X on my *new* Dell
Dimension XPS P90!

These steps should get XFree86 3.1 (X11R6) up and running:

1.  Make a backup copy of your XF86Config!!! (Nothing in this world is perfect)

2.  Ensure this link exists in /usr/X11R6/bin :

   lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root            7 Jan 22 22:51 X -> XF86_S3

        ie:     cd /usr/X11R6/bin
                rm X
                ln -s XF86_S3 X

3. Delete EVERYTHING BELOW this line in XF86Config:

   # The accelerated servers (S3, Mach32, Mach8, 8514, P9000, AGX, W32)

4. Copy this below the above line:

############################################################################
Section "Monitor"

        Identifier      "A Basic Monitor"
        VendorName      "Unknown"
        ModelName       "Unknown"

        Bandwidth       25.2
        HorizSync       31.5
        VertRefresh     60

        Mode "640x480"
                        DotClock        25.175
                        HTimings        640 664 760 800
                        VTimings        480 491 493 525
        EndMode

EndSection

Section "Device"

        Identifier      "#9 GXE64 Pro PCI/VLB"
        VendorName      "#9"
        BoardName       "#9 GXE64 Pro PCI/VLB"
        RamDac          "ti3025"
        Option          "dac_8_bit"
        Option          "number_nine"
        ClockChip       "ti3025"

EndSection

Section "Screen"

        Driver          "accel"
        Device          "#9 GXE64 Pro PCI/VLB"
        Monitor         "A Basic Monitor"

        Subsection              "Display"

                Depth           8
                Modes           "640x480"
                ViewPort        0 0
                                # I prefer to let fvwm handle the virtual
                                # windows.
                #Virtual        800 600

        EndSubsection

        # This is as good as I've been able to get.  My monitor is only
        # mediocre, so you may do better.  You will have to modify the
        # Monitor Section to support this.
        #SubSection "Display"
        #       Depth       16
        #       Weight      565
        #       Modes       "1024x768"
        #       ViewPort    0 0
        #EndSubsection

EndSection
############################################################################

5. Type xinit <CR>.  X should come up.  Type fvwm <CR>.  The (Not So) Feeble
Virtual Window Manager should start.

6. If 1-5 worked:

        A.  Try increasing the Depth to 16, it's easier on the eyes.  I've
read 24 will be available soon :)!

        B.  Start the fun part.  Modify the Bandwidth, HorizSync,
VertRefresh, Mode, DotClock, HTimings, and VTimings to match
you monitor's capabilities.  I WILL NOT provide you mine!  I
don't want to be responsible if they damage your monitor :).

Good Luck and hope it works!

1. Need XF86Config for #9 GXE 64 Pro & CTX 1785GM

I just realized my return address was wrong for the past two posts I sent out...

Anyway,  I'm looking for some help setting up my XF86Config information with
the graphics card and monitor I have.  I cannot get the ConfigXF86 program to
work properly since it always reports a parse error before completing.  Further
investigation shows this to be a parse error in the Xconfig file while running
the reconfig program.  To get around all this I am looking for XF86Config information
for the #9 GXE 64 Pro video card and the CTX 1785GM monitor.  I could also use
the Cards.dat and Monitors.dat format for the above information if available.

Thanks,

-Alan
